Hi all.

I am very interested in relocating to Phoenix, and plan to spend the month of October interviewing, looking at housing, etc.

JOBS
I see several comments about low salaries in the Valley. Labor statistics show that Government jobs are expected to increase greatly in the coming months and years. Anyone know about the job market in PHX - either City or State jobs? That is just one area. Education is of interest as well - and have already looked at ASU's openings. Anyone know of any directories of colleges in PHX?

I have a Master's Degree in Labor-Industrial Relations and 8 years of HR experience.

HOUSING
I am well aware that the housing market is very soft right now, but as a hopeful home buyer, any thoughts on the long-term housing market - whether it will rebound, etc. I know this is all speculative, but any insights would be most appreciated.

Thank you in advance for any feedback.

p.s. You all live in a lovely area.

Other than the various ASU campuses, there are several community colleges that comprise the Maricopa County Community College system. Maricopa Community Colleges

If you mean return to late 2005/early 2006 peak bubble prices, I do not think that will ever occur, if you adjust for inflation. It would take another mania to do that, and it will be at least twenty years before we forget this bubble/bust cycle. Will house prices in metro Phoenix stop dropping sharply at some point? Of course. But with record foreclosures and preforeclosures and a national recession, I do not see that happening for at least a couple of years. Even then, prices will not shoot up dramatically.

I would strongly encourage you to rent for at least a year. Good luck.

My husband teaches part time as an adjunct professor and makes more money teaching for Maricopa Community College System than he would get paid teaching at ASU per class that is why he chose MCC system

Default Job Market

The job market is being affected by the housing market...

PHX has a lot of construction jobs and seeing new commercial projects go up keeps them around (I think residential construction has slowed more than commercial).

As for housing rebounding - it will be tied to affordability, IMO. PHX is not necessarily landlocked; however, most desirable areas tend to hold when it comes to real estate values.

Hi Jack.

Many thanks for your insights, particularly about renting the first year. My first inclination has been to buy right away, to start building up equity after years of renting in NY.

Thank you again.

Hi JDish2000.

Thanks for sharing your insights. Last time I was in PHX was Dec 07, and I noticed a lot of development as well. It didn't depressed economically. The housing market in central PHX looked great -- anyone coming from the East Coast is SHOCKED by the sheer size of the condos, etc.

Take care.

Red face Looking to relocate to Arizona

Hi All!

I have the same concerns about relocating to Arizona. I want to find out about the jobs and wages. The thought of what the schools and various cities outside of Phoenix have come across my mind. What they have to offer my family.

I have my degree in Accounting. We plan to take a trip down to see what everything maybe like, but I would like some opinions of what is special about Arizona; and what I have to look forward to. Thanks everyone!

mark67NYC - Google Elliott Pollack for info on housing and jobs. He's a respected local economist. R.L. Brown has many housing reports but there is $ charge.
