i'm actually thinking about moving to arizona... after reading this..... umm :S

my mother hates drivers and i love driving fast. I live in maine, we have too many stupid drivers from all over the USA come for vacations... There was a corvette trying to go through potholes/muds and yet they get stuck. With my ranger i go just about any where at any given speed. But down south i'd have a car. After reading this, it made me think twice. might aswell get myself a truck anyways to keep bumper cars off my ass or out of my view.

Of course you risk getting ticketed but I've only had two which I was able to get reduced so I didn't get points on my license. I have to say there are very, very few drivers who actually drive 55 mph where it is the limit. Do you?
Why do people who like to speed feel that they are in the right? Just because people like myself try not to drive over the LEGAL speed limit apparently we are the ones in the wrong. I don't want to break the law, I don't want to increase my risk of a crash, I don't want to injure anyone due to reckless speed. I don't want to get a ticket and pay more for my insurance.

Why should I break the law because people like you want me to? Would you run a red light for me?

I don't know much about San Diego, only passed through once years ago. I drive all over the place, and to and from central phx for work. There's even a place about a mile from me (like a rec center type place) but there's always a lot FULL of police cars. I thought it was a police station at first but it's not. Can't remember what it is. But, every once in a while I will see a cop, but that's few and far between.

I moved away from Phoenix twice and lived in California, France and Germany. When I moved back here the last time, in 2001, I was very surprised at how much the drivers had changed. I used to feel very comfortable driving in Phoenix, and now it seems that almost every time I'm on a freeway, I see people weaving in and out of lanes at high speeds, cutting people off by changing lanes at the last second, just inches in front of the other cars. It seems to me, also, that there are a lot of angry people on the roads here.

True. I've wondered why the speeders think they get a "pass". Its still far better to be the law-abiding citizen, even if you're "only going the speed limit"!

The good news is that the cameras are still out there for the speed junkies who continue to play russian roulette! Their time will come...

I forgot to mention that I often see people running red lights and always wonder why there never seem to be any police around when they do.

Actually, the police ARE out there. Many are in their own personal vehicles either going to or from work, or on a day off. They see the very same things that we see, and I'm sure they will call in the reckless drivers as needed.

That's good to know. I hope that they do. Half the time I'm nervous about driving through intersections when the light turns green because of all the red-light runners I've seen.

My mother was hit twice by people running red lights, and she had both cars totalled, so that made me more nervous about it.

Arizona had 1,066 fatal accidents last year, it fell almost 20% and insurance rates followed. I pay $118 every 6 months for insurance...granted I have USAA and have never had an accident or a ticket in Arizona (knocking on wood). Also AZ ranked 5 in the nation for the most reductions of fatal accidents of any kind; pedestrian, bicycle, etc. There are a lot of factors at work such as increased DUI costs and penalties, more photo-radar, number of police officers on the roads, less miles driven by people in Arizona, and safer vehicles. The number of accidents (non-fatal) have also fallen along with auto-thefts. That doesn't mean people in Phoenix don't cut one another off, because that does happen but that's not a Phoenix problem that happens in every city. Most manuvers are named after where they originated; example, the L.A. slide occurs when a car (in rush-hour) will begin to move over until the other car is forced to stop. Usually the cars are right next to one another but one with start to cross in to the other lane forcing the driver to either stop or move themselves. It's very rude and I've seen cars bump one another; don't see this so much in Phoenix because most cars will stop but in L.A. they will continue to "fight" over the right of way.
