My husband may be getting a new job in Tempe (zip 85284) and we would be relocating from MIchigan. We have elementary school age children so an excellent school system is important to us. We currently live in a semi-rural suburb in a lakefront home. Where can we look for homes that has a minimum amount of smog (asthma), is family-oriented, and is a reasonable commute to Tempe?

What suburb are you from? I think that Ahwatukee foothills has the best school system in the area and is more family friendly. Plus, it's not very far from Tempe. There's also Scottsdale but, to me, it doesn't seem as family friendly and you'd have to be in North Scottsdale to experience the good schools.

I from Saginaw, Michigan. Our city schools are bad.. I was vistiting me cuz in Tempe. Their schools seem to be really nice From what I seen when I picked up her son. One of my friends move out there..I think he is teaching in Mesa and he has nothing bad to say about his school. I'm sure you will be happy with most of the schools compared to Michigan.. Vincent

You should consider Ahwatukee. Far enough from downtown that you don't get the smog yet close when you travel by Interstate. It is also close to Tempe and other surrounding cities. You will find mountain views, great shopping and restaurants. As for schools I would check out Summit School of Ahwatukee. It is a wonderful school with excellent teachers and a great reputation.

You might look on realtor.com...they have hard info (schools/crime data) worth looking at.

Good luck. This area is quite nice, but you have to put a lot of effort into finding the right environment for your family.

Smog is a wild card here...To some it is a wonderful air quality. Others are very troubled. Can you come here to check it out to see how you and your kids deal with the environment?
