Lets be honest with her. If heat is a major concern then the entire Phoenix Area really needs to be crossed off your list.

If you want to stay in the southwest then you need to look at Denver, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, or Las Cruces/El Paso. No particular order...just some suggestions.

Its HOT here...It just is! There are no cooler places 1 hour from the city of Phoenix. You will have to head north...at least to Prescott or Flagstaff. Its even hot there but better. Both of those towns are small though. I would cross Arizona off your list. The climate is similar to Vegas as is the air quality. Maybe come for a visit during the summer.

A friend and I are planning to relocate to the Southwest (me from Vermont, her from northern Indiana) and are busy shopping for a new hometown. I'm hoping some of you folks can make some recommendations for us.

I'm a single mom of a 9 year old boy, she's single (no we're not a SSC, just friends ). I'm going back to school and she needs a good job in IT. We want to be within an hour of a major metro area, so Phoenix would be it for AZ, I think, unless maybe Flagstaff would count? Open to all suggestions of course! We have looked at CO, UT, NV and AZ so far but I'm leaning toward AZ. I want to be not too far away from Las Vegas (BF is there), < 5 hr drive or easy flight. No way do I want to live in Vegas though.

What we're looking for is: safe, good schools, within an hour of metro, good IT job market, sunny and dry but preferably NOT nuclear! Do any Phoenix-area towns fit this bill? Which might be the cooler areas? We will be renting so home prices aren't relevant. Our budget can handle up to $1600/mo. or so depending on utilities.

Thanks so much, in advance.

-A, looking forward to leaving Vermont!
Northeast, 56th St & Bell, is nice area, with malls and vars like Barcelona nearby - seems to be cooler than further south. There are IT jobs, but scarcer now of course. $1,600/mo gets a whole lot of house nowadays.

I don't think anywhere in metro Phx, Fountain Hills included, is going to be cool enough for the OP, if heat is an overwhelming concern.

Agreed, you don't see this is as much this year but last year, there were so many whiners about the heat. And they were people like the OP who moved here thinking they could deal with heat only to complain about it on this forum later. We don't need another anti-Phoenix "Oh the heat is so terrible" poster. I would much rather the OP be happy and find what suits her in a place like Denver or Salt Lake City.

Have you ever thought about Reno Nevada??? The weather is nice with just a little snow in the winter, the summers are warm and dry and the flights from Reno to Vegas are dirt cheap and plentiful. The school system is pretty good.
Just a thought if you don't want the heat of the Phoenix area.

How the heck did you pull Phoenix out of that criteria? Do your self and your son a favor, do not move here.

Uhuh-

Once again, so helpful. What are YOUR plans for moving elsewhere, since you hate it here so much?

Was anything I commented last false? Why hide the truth? And I am planning a move within the next 2 months.
