Does anyone know what the red blinking lights on the hillside in the area near Sky Harbor is for? If I am entering the valley at night from the West I use them as a landmark. You can also see them if you are on the I10 when you drive into the valley from Buckeye and look toward the East. Those lights allways amazed me because they don't blink in a uniform fashion. They give the illusion of floating or twinkling lights. I know this seems like a strange question, but I just thought of it and I was at the Hospital all night and am not thinking clearly.

Also would like to know what the strange looking building that appears abandoned south of the I10 and West of the 303 loop about a mile or two. You can see that from the I10.

You're seeing the radio/TV towers on top of South Mountain. On your second question, I assume you're talking about the Phoenix Trotting Track out on I-10, it's an abandoned horse track.

If those lights were moving, then I'd say either cut down on the drinnking, or call the UFO hotline.

SOON2BNSURPRISE answered the question, they are a variety of broadcat towers, and I believe the FAA has one up there too.

Soon2BNSurprise also answered your second question, it is an abandoned horse racing track. The final scenes of a movie that was produced by the lead singer of the 80's rock group, Poison's Bret Mihaels, was filmed at that track about 10 years ago. I believe the reason it was abandoned was because the site had some contaminants.

The racing/trotting track was abandoned because it wasn't making enough money. I believe it was completed sometime in the 60's and maybe stayed open for 2 years. It just wasn't making enough money. It was too far out at a time sprawl hadn't reached the what it is today.

They considered remondeling it and opening it back up a while back but the place is nothing but asbestos. That's why no one has wanted to touch it.

here is some good information on the trotting park

http://www.mi-harness.net/trks/phoenixtrt.html (broken link)

was built for harness racing, but it didn't last long - i think it's a fairly neat design and I would of loved to of seen it back in the 60s (too bad i wasn't close to being alive or in phoenix.........)

a bad investment all around and now an obstacle that kind of sticks out a bit

I forgot what the name of that horse race track was, but I remember something about it when it first opened and I was 8 years old back then. With the growth in the west valley, seems like somebody should buy it and modernize it so residents there wouldn't have to drive to Turf Paradise.

Here's more information and pictures about Trotting Park.

That trotting park also has a bit of movie history, while filming the movie "no code in conduct" they put explosive charges all over the place for that dramatic fireball effect, the only real effect was the death of hundreds of pigeons, or wounded pigeons that suffered a horrible slow death.
