My electric bill is already starting to get quite high and although I had my AC repaired and charged last September, I would like to get another check up/tune up on it so I know it is running most efficient for this summer. I do not want to gert ripped off. My AC unit is only 5 years old so I know the motor is ok, etc. Has anyone had any experience with this, good or bad? Thanks.

Default Gilbert AC guy

I use an AC guy who works the east valley. I think he just works Chandler, Gilbert and Mesa area. If you're in that area send me a DM and I'll give his contact number.

I'm not saying it's right but I've never had an A/C tune-up in my decades here. The one time I had an A/C guy out (because I had put on the wrong type digital thermostat inside) he told me my condenser would probably die that summer and I may as well just replace the whole A/C unit preventatively before it did. Which I did. And I always wondered. He also told me new vent covers throughout the house would make a world of difference and would cost around $100. It was more like $300 and they didn't make any difference at all that I could tell.

If you mean a large service company, no. I always try to use smaller companies - preferably ones that do both heating and cooling - where I feel we get to know each other a bit.

There is no required maintenance on an AC. It does not need a tune up anymore than your refrigerator needs a tune up. If it is working then leave it alone. This annual "tune up" is a scam where they try to sell you things you don't need.

If you're concerned because of the bill going up, its a good idea to have things checked out, but I'd be sure to make it clear you expect a thorough check out. Key terms to mention are things like line pressures, amp draw and wet bulb readings. If you have aps, they have a rebate on an "energy efficient checkup", the documentation required for that rebate is on the web, and it's a good template for what should be on every a/c repair order, but almost never is.

Many a/c guys just check the temp split & assume if that is close, everything else is fine. That isn't true. If your repair order just says "checked a/c, added refrigerant", you're dealing with a hack. Adding refrigerant isn't something that should be done without all the data.

Ponderosa is totally correct on this, however this guy asked this question 3 years ago, and the first response was today......Really?
However, as told by someone else on this forum, if you google the words thermal & medics, the second hit will get you what I consider to be the most honest and helpful guy in the valley.
