Hello Everyone:

Both my husband and I are near retirement age, and we are thinking of
spending 6 months in our hometown in Canada, then moving to Phoenix
for 6 months in the Fall/Winter....

We would be bringing our 2 young adult daughters with us -- one is very
rebellious and would only take 60 seconds to get in with the "wrong crowd"

Soooooooo, we have found a very reasonably priced condo that's located
on West Camelback Road between N 35th Ave and I 17 (very close to the
Grand Canyon University)

I have been reading all the posts regarding "where to live" and I'm not
certain if this area would be a good fit for our family....

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Thanks so much
Regards,

Patricia

This is one of those areas that's only redeeming aspect is it's proximity to GCU and Downtown.

Not a good area. It would only take your "rebellious daughter" a short walk to the corner Circle K to get into the wrong crowd.

No. It's a medium bad area. Not the worst, in town but far, far, from the best. I think you would regret your purchase for the rest of your life.

Default Thanks to the great Phoenix locals for your advice - much appreciated !!!

Hi everyone:

Just wanted to say a sincere thank you to everyone who gave us their
suggestions regarding a location for our family (including our rebellious
daughter !!??).......

And thanks to you all for taking the time to reply --
Sad to say, it does appear that this area may not be a good fit for our family.

However, we are still moving to the Phoenix area, and there are tons of
wonderful choices and areas to live.

Thanks again, I do hope you all realize how much you have helped our family!!

You have a wonderful city and wonderful citizens !!!

Kindest regards,

PatriciaCanadian

I'm looking at some apartments in that area near GCU. I accept that it's not a great area but just how bad is it? Would it be safe to walk around alone in the daytime? Is there a lot of gang activity in that area? Drugs etc?

Short answer is no.

If your that concerned, I would recommend going there at night on a weekend. I would stay away from all 35th ave in central phoenix.

No, it's not really a safe area to walk around in, and yes there are lots of drugs, gangs and prostitutes. If you have no other form of transportation, I would look for something on the bus line a few miles North or East of GCU.

This is completely overblown, by leaps and bounds! The area IS safe to walk around, especially during the day but gets kinda ify further away from the college. There aren't many gangs in this area NOR prostitutes, LOL! This is also not a huge area for drugs like areas of Sunnyslope, S. Phoenix, etc. This is a large low-middle income/middle class area for Hispanic families which represent about 50-60% of the residents.
