I'm looking at a rental that is just south of Thunderbird and just east of Tatum, not far from the Paradise Valley mall.

Is this a safe area? Does anyone know what school district that is?

Thanks

gsheridan!.....you're back.....still haven't decided?....

you may remember I highly endorsed the area just south of the area you mention here.....however, the area SE of Tatum and Thunderbird is fine....smaller lots, slightly older, but a very convenient location....nice park around Sweetwater and 52nd...lots of speedy traffic, though....drive carefully.....as for safety, crime can happen anywhere, of course....take the normal common sense precautions, but don't live in fear....

the PV Mall area seems to have every type of store you'll need....Costco will open soon at the NW corner of the mall...good Ace hardware at either NE corner of Tatum and Greenway or T-Bird....good stores at all those intersections....Home Depot up at Bell.....

I can't answer about the schools, though....sorry....

Its a nice area. The only bad things Ive seen around there are panhandles, which there are quite a few of.

At Tatum and Thunderbird? LOL, I'm sure one of two have found their way there but I wouldn't say "there are quite a few."

Everytime I went down there I saw them. And no, Im not exaggerating. The last one we saw was sleeping on the bench near the Dairy Queen drive-thru asking everyone who drove through for change.

I can see that, isn't this area near "the square???" I always get those northeast parts confused and what actually falls inside "the square."

Yes, I'm back! I had to deal with getting my place in NY rented. Now I'm done with that, but we have less than 3 weeks to find a place out there

Thanks for the quick feedback on the area near the mall. Yes, I remember the area you were recommending well - I've been watching the area, but nothing has become available in that area in our price range, until that one I saw today near the mall. Unfortunately, the place is taken. I just called.

It's a little nerve racking being this close to our move in date(Aug 1st) and not having a place yet, but I'm hoping that anyone who still hasn't rented their place out for August might be motivated to get someone in there, and we'll get a good deal somewhere.

All the research I've done on here has really paid off. In the end, it's going to come down to which areas have places available, but I have a pretty good idea at this point which areas are desirable, and which ones we like, so we don't have to waste time on places that don't meet our criteria.

Steve-o and fcorrales80, thanks for the feedback too. It's a good thing I found a renter for my house in NY. I might have been doing some panhandling of my own, out near that mall

I think "the square" is a new-ish name for the now not-so-good area over near 32nd and Greenway/Thunderbird??.....two miles from Tatum, but a world away in atmosphere....I don't think there are many panhandlers on Tatum except maybe the occasional one in the left-turn lane median.....

I don't know where the DQ is mentioned here in the thread

You might consider a short-term rent of a snowbird/winter rental unit (check Craigslist) and putting everything in storage for a month or two while you look around for a long-term lease place. Often the "winter" rental owners are willing to negotiate price over the summer just to have the units occupied and some income coming in.

Ok this is what I was thinking. So my original thought and "mind-mapping" was correct in the assumption, from when I visited the area, that the very few panhandlers would be located elsewhere...closer to the Greenway off-ramp of the 51 perhaps? Guess that's what happens when you listen to someone living in Chicago, LOL! Sorry Steve-o...
