Drove home tonight and noticed a helicopter circling the neighborhood near 40th St/Cholla. The chopper made a shallow circle over and over again for ten minutes while I watched and then flew away to the NW. It had likely been circling a while - people were up and the street watching, though nobody seemed to know what was up. I think it was a police helicopter, but I'm not 100% sure. Anybody know anything about it?

Sounds like a Maintenance Test Flight to me. How far from an airfield?

Most likely it was a DPS helicopter looking for a criminal. You see that quite a bit in Phoenix metro area.

Phoenix police helicopters are always up and about. Very common. No telling exactly what it was for. Could be a stolen vehicle being followed, lojack, missing person search, building roof check following a burglary alarm, pursuit, etc. etc.

I've seen helicopters look for people and this seemed a whole lot different. Imagine a pilot pulling left and turning in a small circle over and over and over and over and over again for ten minutes. Totally weird.

Probably a police situation. If they were trying to catch someone, and had him pinned down to a small area, it makes sense. I saw one of those unfold over about a 45 minute period in a friend's neighborhood several months ago.

I remember when I used to live at my apartment every once in a while there would be a helicopter circling above us with its spotlight on the ground.. like it was searching for someone. I would always lock my doors and be all scared.. lol.

Haha, totally not time to move. First time I've seen anything out of the ordinary in my hood. A couple miles north and it's a different story, though.
