My husband and I are considering a move from New Mexico to AZ in about one year to one year and a half. I am a mental health therapist and am hoping to get some feedback from other therapists in AZ around licensure and job opps. I hold two licenses in NM - one is the equivalant of an LAC in AZ. I will be elegible for independent licensure (LPC-equivilant) here in NM in just a few months (the other license is as an independent substance abuse counselor; however, I am not as concerned about this license, as I am about the LPC track).

In terms of licensure as an LPC, in some ways NM has more stringent requirements for this level of licensure, but in other ways, AZ appears to have some very different requirements. The biggest challange that I am running into is trying to figure out AZ's requirements, based on the ways the regs are written on the website. I am hoping to get some clarification and would very much appreciate feedback to the following questions. I am also checking with the AZ Board for clarifcation, of course, but also wanted to get some feedback from therapists who have been there . Thanks so much in advance!

1. Does AZ require that the supervised work expereince (while working on the required hours as an LAC, in order to become elegible for LPC licensure) be provided only by AZ licensed supervisors, or will they consider appropriate supervisors, who are licesned in another state?

2. NM requires a 48 credit Masters Degree in Counseling, and AZ appears to require 60 credits. Will the AZ Board allow an applicant to complete these additional 12 credits outside of a formal Masters Degree program (in other words, since I have already complete my Masters Degree, will they accept additional graduate level coursework completed post-Masters Degree)?

3. My Masters Degree program required 6 semster credits of Practicum, which translates to 600 hours. Will this be acceptable to the AZ Board to meet the Practcum requirements?

4. In case I have to start over to complete my supervised hours, are there plenty of paid job opps for LAC's in the Phoenix area?

5. What are the job opps like at this time in the Phoenix area for mental health therapists? What are the opportunites for private practice? Are there openings on most of the local insurance panels? Are there any good group practices that you might be able to recommend, who I may be able to contact, about possibly joining their practices.

6. We are considering moving to the Chandler area. What are your thoughts on this area for job and/or private or group practice opportunites?

7. What is the general salary ranges for LPC's in the Phoenix area? What about for LAC's?

Finally, my husband is working on becoming a licensed substance abuse counselor. The info on the website is confusing in this area, too...so, the question for him is... do you have to have a BA/BS degree in AZ to become licensed as a subtance abuse counselor, or is an AA degree accpetable for the first level of licensure? Also, what is the general salary range for SA Counselors?

I know this is a lot to ask , but I would very much appreciate any feedback and insights from therapists in the trenches there in the Phoenix area. Thanks so much again for your help in advance!
