Hey all,
My wife and i will be moving to the Tempe/Phoenix area in about a month or so in order for me to attend grad school at ASU. We are taking a trip to that area in a week or so to scout out some areas to live. We are looking to rent a house due to the fact that we have a dog and a cat. I am 30 and looking for a safe place to live that has some character, along with some good restaurants and places to grab a drink or two but def not a party scene! Thanks in advance for the advice!!

If you're looking for a house, I would say look in South Scottsdale or Tempe, and avoid West Mesa. How far away are you comfortable going? Do you want to be on the bus line? Most of Tempe is pretty nice, and the further south you go the quieter it will be. If you want a somewhat newer house, I would look 5-6 miles south of campus around Warner or Elliot Road off of Warner or McClintock. This is a much safer area than around campus as well, but is a 10 minute drive. If you are OK with a 50's-70's built house and want to be near campus, there's plenty of that available as well.

Chandler Mall area? Houses are not very expensive there for rent, area is nice, there are plenty of restaurants and ASU is about 8 miles away. Zip code 85226.

I would NOT move to Avondale unless you want to have an hour commute to school each day. Just a heads up since it sounds like you are planing on going to the main campus.

What campus will you be attending for grad school? Tempe Main or Downtown for instance? Are you looking to live near transit options like the light rail?
