The storm on Saturday night caused significant damage to Burton Barr branch. According to the article below as much as 50 gallons per minute leaked from the roof. Closure expected for at least a few days. I hope the local history books on floor 5 are okay. They have some books that may be difficult to replace. Make plans to visit another branch if you were planning a visit.

It sounds like the leak was from a ruptured sprinkler pipe rather than the roof. The rare book room and the Arizona room appear to have been largely spared.

I work there. The pictures of the roof would indicate a complete failure of the roofing "tiles" that comprise of Will Bruder's "floating roof". In turn, the tiles warped, causing the water line to rupture, flooding a very large majority of the library. I don't know if the rare book room was spared or not. Flooding of the fourth floor was, significant (location of the rare book room). Teen central and MACH1 space, also located on the forth floor, had significant flooding. It made me sad to see the photos of water cascading down from the ceiling and damaging millions of dollars worth of non fiction material on the fifth floor.

What a tragedy. Why would a library have any type of roof (they called it floating) that could suffer water damage? This is awful, and hopefully the guys who thought this would be acceptable when building it, will pay for the repairs. All those books, soaked. As a book lover, I abhor anything that damages books, especially rare historical ones. JMHO

This kind of calamity is what I have come to expect from "edgy" modernist buildings like Burton Barr. These buildings' hatred for beauty is usually matched by their disregard for basic functionality.

Thanks. What I don't immediately see in the article is any hint of whether it's something that was possibly due to neglect of basic maintenance.

Also, I can't help noticing a typo that would have been fixed by basic spell-check.

I work there. From my understanding this was not caused by neglect of basic maintenance. Will Bruder designed this "floating roof" to basically move. It wasn't a standard solid immovable roof. Apparently a microburst hit the library on Saturday, causing the roof to move, lift off from where it was supposed to be (a design flaw?) and thus rupturing water sprinklers, causing the flooding.

this is veering off-topic, but I also notice grammar and spelling errors all the time now in internet news articles....I hate it....I believe computers, at times, glean news from various sources and it's all posted automatically....seems as if a real human never even reviews the articles before they're posted.....the utter dumbing-down of America.....(rant over!!!)

This is sad. One of the best instances of modern architecture in the state. Beautiful, distinctive, functional.
