Does anybody have any recommendations for areas I should look in my price range? Specific subdivisions? I thought I saw some great values in some of the outskirt communities (Queen Creek, Maricopa, Apache Junction), but after some reading here I am deterred by cost of utilities.

I am gonna be coming out for an extended weekend towards the end of Feb to do some recon.
I am not sure if you complaining about being far from "hip" or bragging? I don't think the east valley is your answer if you are looking for "cool". Why try the areas near downtown Scottsdale, downtown Tempe or in Phoenix near north or Biltmore. These areas are more "hip" for a 41 year old single.
Unless you like living in family areas with big wheels, skateboards and bikes that will soon to turn into cars and motorcycles.
