My husband recently applied for a (police) job in Avondale, AZ and if he gets it we are making the move from Canada. We have a baby and it is important to me that if we do move, we live in a family friendly city. I read that Gilbert is a good choice, however, looking at the map it's quite a drive to Avondale. Are there any cities around Avondale that compare to Gilbert? We are visiting AZ at the end of the month and I would love to drive around to various places. Thanks!

Assuming that the Avondale PD doesn't require you to live in Avondale, I'd start with Goodyear, which is very nice and closest to Avondale, then I would go north and look at Peoria (northern part is nicer) and Surprise. Lots of posters here from all those areas who can give you more details.

Take a look at Litchfield Park also. Some nice homes at good prices.

-Goodyear...be sure to look at the Estrella community.
-The Verado community in Buckeye is also worth looking at.
-Litchfield Park is another good choice.

I am a AZ native!! We lived in Litchfield Park for years during and after my husband retired from the Air Force and was stationed at Luke AFB. We liked it never had any problems. Some areas in Avondale were not good as I remember......and the high school was TERRIBLE. I think there is a new one now though. You won't have to worry about that right now though.... Goodyear is nice. IMO Gilbert is way out there. Unless you work in Tempe or Chandler. Definately would be a long and I do mean LONG commute.
