i bought my wifes loose stone from blue nile and saved a good amount of money just buying the stone and then having it fitted into a ring (actually we had one made for us)

you can see the certs and get the full run down on how the ring grades out - you also can review the stone when it gets in and if you don't like it return it - very easy process

however, the problem is price range - looking at the loose stones at blue nile it's hard to locate stones in the .4 to .46 range for under $450 - there are a lot of options between there and $600, but you'd still need it mounted into a ring

This reminds me of the neighborhood kid who dares other kids to engage in stupid acts that he would never engage in himself. I have a feeling you wouldn't dare give your wife a cubic zirconium for her actual wedding ring. That is playing with fire. To the OP, Costco has jewelry including some small diamond rings.
