Hi guys. I am originally from Tennessee, moved to Vegas because of a grad school scholarship(haha I know, who does that right?). I have lived in the Vegas/Henderson area for about three years now. I have been considering making a move for the past few months. I like Vegas, but it's a place that I would rather visit and not live. I would love to move to Chicago, but I don't particularly care for cold weather. If there was a Chicago in the desert..I would be all over it. Unfortunately for me, that doesn't exist. So moving on...I have been to Phoenix a couple times and really enjoyed it. I have been researching real estate and demographics/economy, outdoor activities, shopping, already found lots of Trader Joes locations (which I love lol), as well as "things to do" for locals. I was wondering if anyone who could compare living in these two cities might be willing to give me a little insight? Thanks a bunch!

Phoenix/Scottsdale is a different world compared to Vegas/Henderson.

Vegas is a very compact city with everything focusing on The Strip/downtown. Phoenix is very spread out with a bunch of different focal points like downtown Scottsdale, downtown Tempe, Westgate/Stadium area, downtown Phoenix, etc.

About the only similarities between Henderson and Scottsdale are that they are both upscale in terms of housing.

Oh, and don't forget we have major league sports teams.

Rebel, can I ask why you would rather visit Vegas instead of live there. I m interested in both areas you speak of and would like your take.

You will be making a HUGE mistake moving to Phoenix from Vegas. You will end up regretting it and coming right back.

interesting. Why ???

Seems to me that it depends what area of Vegas vs. what area of Phoenix/Scottsdale.

For example - Boulder City, NV is the equivalent of Cave Creek / Carefree, AZ - these areas are on the edge of town and are more laid back, and focused on the outdoors and surrounding deserts.

Totally different than congested areas closer to the "city center" of Phoenix or the "strip" in Vegas.

One thing about Vegas and Phoenix is they don't have a downtown in the "classic" sense. The strip and its buildings are not a downtown. Downtown Phoenix is totally unlike downtown Chicago, Manhattan, San Francisco, etc. Phoenix and vicinity is all about a proliferation of walled urban villages expanding outwards, as the state sells it's land to developers. Same thing in Vegas although it's federal lands.

You're not being rude at all. I was born in Phoenix and lived there for 30 years. It was nothing like it is now. It has gone WAY downhill. My friends and family want to get the hell out of there themselves. Las Vegas is a live and let live place where you still have your freedoms while Arizona itself has become a severe police state. I will not even go visit there anymore. They have photo cameras all over the roads watching you and issuing automated tickets. Prepare to be taxed to death too. They also do not have the advantage of being a 24 hour town. The fact of the matter is you can live in Seven Hills or somewhere similar and it is just as nice as any suburb in Phoenix, without all the Arizona B.S.

The WEATHER!!! I'm an air force brat and have lived in many different climate zones around the world but the one thing I noticed different when my wife and I moved from Phoenix to Las Vegas a couple years ago is the climate. I know sounds funny huh. You'd think the climates in these two desert locales are very comparable. But the longer I live here the more differences I notice. To me, Phoenix has a way nicer winter and that nice period lasts longer than Vegas. Vegas weather is very up and down, especially in the spring and fall with constant fronts moving through bringing with them tons of wind and temperature fluxuations. In Phoenix winters are milder and with less wind. Rarely would Phoenix drop below 35 degrees for a low and below 60 for a high. Here in Vegas I've seen many days where the high doesn't get above 50 and lows that dropped into the mid 20s on many occasions. Although I will give summers to Vegas though. The number of days above 100 are fewer and less humid than Phoenix. Yes during Phoenix's monsoon season (July/August/Sept) it does get a little humid, especially for how hot it is (100+). But I actually miss the monsoon rains which you do not see much of out here in Vegas. Phoenix receives about 7-8 inches of rain per year and Vegas around 4. This difference may not seem like much but it is. Phoenix's Sonoran desert is much more lush than the Mojave desert around Vegas. There are many more creeks and streams found in the mountains surrounding Phoenix. Although Vegas has Lake Mead, Phoenix has several different lakes to choose from and on different sides of town. Both places have locations to get away from the heat of summer and to enjoy the snow in winter. Vegas has Mt. Charleston and Phoenix has Flagstaff and nearby Payson. Phoenix is more sprawled than Vegas but it also has more of a "regular" city feel to it with professional sports teams and local mom and pop places to eat that are unique to Phoenix. Vegas feels like a place that just came about from people who visited the strip and then decided to stay here. Eating at a nice restaurant here means heading to the strip most of the time or to another chain restaurant. Phoenix has all these chain establishments plus it's own mom and pop flavors splashed all over the city with many different night-life centers such as Mill Ave and old town Scottsdale. Also certain things just bug me about Vegas but that's perhaps because I spent the previous 8 years in Phoenix and i'm spoiled. Other than the US95 in summerlin, the freeways here SUCK!!!They are old, poorly marked and don't have enough lanes for the amount of traffic and people living here. There's one section on the 515 (known as 95 to the locals) where the freeway is elevated and between each column holding the freeway up it is warped so you're going up and down in your vehicle at a fast rate. Just seems so dated and potentially unsafe. The Phoenix freeways are long and expanding and all rubberized for a quiet and smooth ride. (and they are getting rid of the traffic cameras along the phoenix freeways, something that came about in the past few years that I hated). Registering your car in Phoenix is based on the blue book value with depreciation every year. Nevada takes the vehicles original msrp and bases your registration or tax on that and it doesn't drop as much each year as it does in AZ. I'm still paying the same amount for registration on my vehicle as I did when I bought it new in AZ and I've owned it for almost three years!

Anyway these are just a few of my observations after living in Las Vegas for over two years now after living in Phoenix for 8 glorious years. I actually really like Vegas and we moved here to be closer to in-laws. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to move back to Phoenix if our situation was different.

Phoenix actually wants to make a good impression by adding many venues and points of interest all over it's cityscape. Las Vegas really only focuses on the strip. Plus Phoenix definelty has more history than LV. LV was estabilished in 1905 and incorperated in 1911 as a city. Phoenix was founded in 1868 and incorperated in 1881. Plus the area of Phoenix has had people living in it nearly since 1 AD and with the Spanish and European influence there is much more historical culture than LV. LV literally grew up over night. Phoenix went through it's boom for a long time but things here are slowing down. It won't be long until the next boom comes

I think Las Vegas Drunks main problem with AZ is the freeway speed cameras, which I think are being done away with in July.

Arizona Drops Redflex Freeway Speed Camera Contract

Phoenix > Las Vegas, and it's not even close.
