I'm asking this because I moved here and updated all my car information, got new plates and got a driver's license. I paid for all that - expensive, but no biggie.

Now, I'm leasing my car. I was paying $259 back in Minnesota. I got my statement in the mail today, and I see it got raised to $280 due to taxes. Does anyone know what's going on here? I'm not in a position to be paying $280 a month for my car - that's definitely pushing it.

I'll definitely get in touch with the company, but I'd like people's ideas as to why it's so much more? That's an extra $240 a year I'd be spending...that could go towards other things. I may consider just dropping out of this lease if I can because it's starting to cost a lot more than I anticipated...

"Careful about moving your leased car

If you plan to move during the time of your lease, be aware that many lease contracts may restrict you in some way. Most prohibit moving their vehicles out of the country. Some even prohibit moving out of state (check the fine print in your contract).

If you are permitted to move your vehicle out of state (which is typically not a problem), your payments could change slightly due to different sales tax rates between the states. Always notify your lease company when you move so that they can make the adjustments. "

So your lease payments here are 280 a month instead of 259 in MN? It probably is just sales tax difference, perhaps some other tax. Ask for a breakdown.

If that 21 a month makes that much difference to you, then yes, try to get out of the lease, but I'll bet they won't let you without paying a penalty that will be more than the difference in payments. What does the lease say about terminating?.

Have you considered a second job? If the deal breaker is $21 a month then you may need to increase your income. By the way is it $21 a month or $20 a month? $259 + $21 = $280 or $252 a year more, while $20 a month would make it $240 a year more.

Maybe you need to cut some other expense like maybe eating out or Starbucks. I bet you could save the $20 (or is it $21) that way.

Yeah, it's $21 a month more, I wasn't doing the exact math. Regardless, it's a lot more over the course of the year.

I mean, it's not like it's A LOT more, but it's just an added expense that really sucks. =/
