The Bonuses depend on the school district. Some will some won't.

I've noticed that the 'nicer' districts like Gilbert and Chandler don't feel the need to offer relocation bonuses because they have an easier time attracting teachers than a district like Glendale, where I'll be teaching because most people don't really want to teach kids who come from impoverished areas. I really wanted to teach kids who come from a rough area because I can make more of a difference. I'm just thankful that because of this, I will be receiving a $1,000 bonus!

Last time I checked. Glendale pays better. Could be wrong because I quickly went the charter school route when I found I could make more at the Charter Schools.

Also, when teaching in a "bad" area there can be incentives... such as having much of your student loans forgiven.

well in ohio where i was teaching, the charter schools paid crap!

that's why i decided to go the public school route. i got my contract in from buckeye elementary school district, and i am a little disappointed in the salary, i was offered a little more from pendergast, but i turned that down because they didn't offer the relo money. a friend of mine just got hired at a high school located in pima, arizona, and they are starting her at $42,000, plus relo expenses and she has the same experience as me!!!!

i agree with whoever said how are us new teachers supposed to get by on so little a salary and be expected to move all the way across the country!!!!!

Being a new teacher is tough. I'm actually taking around a $16,000 pay cut to come to Arizona. I made $72,000 teaching in Palmdale, CA. I will be making $56,000 in Phoenix....I was also told that I have the opportunity of moving up to Admin and getting my own campus in a year. Hell, I may just open my own charter school. Who knows. So next year my salary will be back near $65,000-70,000.

I have $40,000 cash that we can tap into if needed. My wife works as well and the cost of living is surprisingly lower. We paid off her van and only have my Truck payment.

For us the paycut was well worth it in order to get out of California.

Default School counselor

Just wanted to say that I am a school counselor, I will be moving out in another month. I accepted a job in Wickenburg's school district. The pay they offered was about the same as what I would have been offered around here in Ohio (btw, gyrlonfilm, what part of Ohio are you from? I am in the Dayton area). Anyway, they also didn't offer any type of relocation bonus or anything, I assumed that was because it is a smaller school district. I will be living in Surprise (Wickenburg is too far from the big city for my taste). The problem is that here in Ohio the jobs just aren't there, that's the biggest reason I decided to move, even though the pay isn't any better. One job I applied for had 79 people apply for it - 79!!!! I thought I was trying to get a job as a counselor, not audition for an acting role!!! Oh, but I didn't go on blind faith - I had a little extra money this summer, so I decided to go visit first and secure an apartment, partly because I have never been out to Arizona before - loved it, btw! And I totally relate to what everyone on here is saying about how do they expect new teachers to afford a move, that's what I am in the process of trying to figure out right now; I may have to get a loan just to move!!! But it's all about getting your foot in the door, just like someone else on here mentioned.

nichole i am glad to hear about your job experience! by the way, i live in lakewood ohio, a suburb of cleveland. and i absolutely get what your saying about the job thing. in lorain, oh where i was teaching this past year, i read that they cut 200 teachers in the public schools for this upcoming school year! i was teaching at a charter school and it wasn't good.

i have only heard great things about the phoenix area. my boyfriend's cousin is moving out to phoenix around the same time i would be (around the end of july), she is going to ASU Glendale campus. i have decided to forgo the buckeye job because i may accept a job for the peoria unified school district. i have been waiting with my contract from buckeye to see if i get any other calls, and i had avondale school district and peoria call me this week and both offer me jobs. i am leaning towards peoria because they have a great reputation, and have lots of opportunities for music and the arts (my area is teaching music).

so we'll see what happens, i am waiting to hear from HR and see what they offer.

I moved here from columbus, oh 10 years ago. I cannot image going back. My wife and and I both grew up in Ohio and we simply love it here. Congrats on the teaching job, I agree with the others who have posted, Buckeye will be a good place to start in phoenix.

You only know a couple people because you are from Michigan. Being a graduate from The Ohio State University we have quite the following. I have met several of your kind out here. they are always looking to expand their numbers. If you follow college football, let me know and I will put you on our email list for where we watch the games. Typically all Big 10 school supporters. Good Luck with the teaching.
