in nikon line about as useful as you can get all in one is their 18-200mm but there really is no such thing as one lens that does it all ..it really depends what your shooting, how low the light and is it moving fast for just starters.
if i had only one lens on a dx small sensor size camera it would be a 35mm...
that equals the old standard 50mm on a full sensor fx camera or film... 50mm on a non full frame camera is really like a 70mm,not as good as a 35mm for a walk around lens
I would like to upgrade my kit len and hope to have one with all purpose. Thanks.
There isn't one lens that's superior in all aspects (even in the Nikon line) so finding the right lens depends a lot of what you're interested in shooting. What is it about the kit lens that you don't like? Are you looking for a wider zoom range, better low-light performance, sharper pictures, or something else?
I'm a little surprised there aren't more responses...like asking a stock board, "what's your fave 3 stocks?" Usually there are pages, lol!
Unless the OP is shooting birds, etc., at long distances, I would not rec'd any zoom that is much "longer" than 85 or 100mm.
Yes, "what" the OP shoots is unknown, but I would bet many of us "use" ~20 to 85mm for 95% of shooting, with a zoom. Fixed focal length
lenses are usually very/good to "better", imo, but if the OP is shopping for one lens, that won't fill his/her bill.
If the OP is sticking to Canon lenses, I would rec'd a EFS 17-85 zoom with image stabilization, (a very reasonably priced lens), or for big dough,
a Canon 17-40 USM lens.
If the OP is after less dough/longer zoom range, the budget Canon EF-S 55-250 covers a lot of ground, but is a budget lens, performance-wise, imo.
With today's sensor quality, a reasonable crop seems to serve the lack of long zoom, unless one is a birder or shooting antelope at 1000 yards, imo.
I would also rec'd hunting the net, for good price deals, on Canon or Tamron, or Sigma or, any lens(s). Buy.com and Newegg offer some sweet deals,
as does Adorama and B&H, in my experience. My 50cts, from an old amateur...

I love the Canon 50mm f1.8 II. This is my fav indoor/portrait shooter.
For everything else I shoot with my 28mm-135mm 4.5-5.6 I am finding that I like this one more for walking. Will soon be replaced by a Sigma 10-20mm for general purpose.
i have the sigma 10-20mm and even on a dx sensor i find it still a perspective that isnt for a walk around lens.
you need to be right up close or every thing is too far away... angles and distances are very exagerated as well as buildings tilt....
its really a special purpose lens ill whip out every so ofton but nothing id use daily like a 18-200 or 17-55 or 24-70mm
