I just recently started getting interested in and playing around with editing photos in picasso or picassa or whatever its called.

I've been playing with the soft focus, making things b&w, etc.

I have some pictures from trips to jamaica and wanted to get a poster blown up for my gf's new place.

I have a pretty close up picture of a hibiscus. I made the background soft focus. What I'd like to do is leave the flower in color but make the background b&w. Is this possible to do in picasso?

Is there any free program where I could do this? I really dont want to buy photoshop.

Thanks.

Picasa doesn't have the control to isolate something with with a complete shape like a flower, you could do a circle around the flower in color with the rest b&w, but getting just the flower will be difficult.

You can do just the flower with Paint.NET or GIMP they're both free, GIMP does a bit more but is harder to use.
Paint.NET - Free Software for Digital Photo Editing
GIMP - for Windows

You can download free trials of Photoshop, Lightroom, Corel Paint shop and a few others and use those. They give you 30 days to play with 'em so it's a pretty nice deal.

Since you want to start editing photos and you want software which is free, you might as well start learning to use GIMP, it is powerful, it is free, there is a lot of support. You can get it here: GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program
