Finally got one! This was about a week ago and hand held...a day before the recent lunar eclipse. Taken just south of Fairbanks Alaska...(click to enlarge) with my Nikon D70 and new zoom, which has like this gyroscope feature to steady a shot.
Thanks, Presto! That was taken with a Canon 20D and 100-400mm zoom lens, hand held. Nothing exotic at all. Half-moons show the best contrast, and it's important to get a good exposure. Most people (and cameras) greatly overexpose the moon because they're trying to achieve an exposure balance between the black sky and the moon. It sounds obvious, but you need to expose for the moon.
