I will be attending a reunion with college gal pals mid-April and spending time in Bodega Bay, Monterey, Carmel By the Sea, traveling Hwy 1 through Point Reyes and Tomales Bay, to Napa, Muir Woods and then ending in San Francisco. I know that the area is replete with gorgeous landscape, but are there any tips y'all can provide so that I don't chicken out and shoot safely (aka Auto mode)? I will be traveling with a T1i, a 50mm f/1.4, 15mm-85mm and 55mm-250mm lenses, ND and circular polarizing filters, my tripod, remote shutter release, and 2 8gig cards. Anything else I'm missing in terms of equipment (besides buying more lenses)? What would be interesting shots, animals, sea critters, sunsets, sunrises, missions? I'm overwhelmed by the possibilities and don't want to fall short. Tips? tips? tips?

Are you really going to drive through San Francisco three times or was your list in random order?

Land SFO, drive to Bodega Bay, then to Carmel then to the city for the last 3 days.

If you want more options in the redwoods for whether people are in the shots or not, or how many people are in the photos, you may need to arrive as early as possible. Many more visitors there than in the north redwoods where the image below was taken.

Hi Bibit. If you're interested in birds, a trip to the Palo Alto Baylands is a must. It's one of the best places to photograph herons and egrets I've ever seen.

Hey J, thanks for replying. I'd love that, but wondering how much bird I can get with a measly 250mm. I know you have a bazooka with you when you shoot birds. I'll do the best I can and will post back if we happen to go there. I'll add it to our list of To Do's.
It is unfortunate that a 40 mile stretch of PCH fell into the water on the the way to Big Sur from Carmel. The workaround route is just too long for all of us to squeeze in to our week.

Unfortunately that slide will mess up the coastal route for sure.
Your "measly" 250 will work great at Baylands. There's a fenced-off rookery there and you can get super close to the birds. You shoot over the fence into the palm trees. Plus you can get some excellent BIF action between the rookery and the ponds there. Lots of ducks, stilts, and other shore birds in the water too.
This shot is from there and taken at 210mm focal length.

Thanks J...as usual you are very encouraging and supportive. I've never actually used the 250mm since I got it last December because the weather didn't permit going outdoors. In anticipation of last Saturday's moon, I shot everything in sight with it, including a lame sparrow on my backyard tree. This was taken 10 feet away and cropped obviously. Had to test the limits of RAW. As it turned out, I never shot the stupid super moon due to cloud cover. I tried the next day but no such luck either.

Just got a new gadget since my last post that you might find useful.
One of those wireless shutter remotes, for about $75. This one is good for about 300 feet away.
The one I have locks-up the camera if light is low and the auto-focus does not cycle through. So I'm using it with manual focus. But it lets me get a lot further into the trees and stuff.
