I am an occassional wheeler- dealer with antiques, collectibles, tag sales etc. A while back I acquired movie film from the estate of a known/ noted photographer/ cinematographer. He has some noted work in the smithsonian for documentation of shaker life, and the construction of the 1939 world's fair. He did quite a bit of work with yale; particularly filming early yale/new haven medical operations. I (and a few other folks) tried selling a couple of his photos on ebay- there was no interest.

I have no knowledge of film.

I have several bins of old film. I assume they were stored in a basement, garage or attic.

Without measuring widths- some seem maybe 1/4" wide, some a bit bigger, some bigger still.

The larger cans are maybe 12-14" in diameter.

They are most likely from the 1950's- 1980.

They all seem dirty to the touch.

When I obtained them - I hand unwound quite a few looking at the film with my eye- a few were operations.

I saw a tiny film marked univac sales film.

I assume much of this film will have little value.

If you project an old, dirty film- will it ruin the film?

Can old film be washed/ rinsed; particularly by an amateur?

If so- can a rinse trough be set up between hand crank wheels (sorry, not sure of the name)

If by chance there is something of real interest in one of the films, would you just sell the film outright,

or would you make copies? Is that considered unethical/ illegal without the estates permission?

Any advice would be a big help- thanks-Mark
