I don't know what happened but I was looking at the Chinese lacquered box , wrote a wild guess ( portable shrine) and now it doesn't make sense at all as the photo is something quite different !

I'll put you out of your misery. Tet tea got the closest guess.

It's the cap-end of an empty tube of toothpaste. (I cut it open to see how little was left after my husband squeezed it absolutely flat, and took a picture of the top.)

Oh jeeze, that was my next guess too. OK maybe not.... Cool looking, but there is no way in a million years I would have come up with that for an answer. Good one!

I'm glad you all enjoyed it! I was hoping I wasn't being to obscure, but I loved the guesses. It's interesting to take a photo of something admittedly bizarre (I mean, who does that?) and see all the imaginations here at work.
