Folks of CD,
Right now I just have a Kodak DX6490 its a couple years old. Any ways I like the qaulity of the pictures. So my question is what is this DSLR that I hear everyone use? I want to get more into photography but I really don't know much about it. What do I need?

If there is any camera Gods, please bless me with some answers.

I want to someday have high qaulity photos.

Thanks, Josh

If you want to someday have high quality photos, I suggest you take some classes ... maybe evening classes ... you will learn a lot about photography and you will be able to make high quality photos. You need to take a lot of pictures to finally have that one high quality photo ...

I agree classes really helped me a lot! Read photography magazines, look at pictures on photo net. And keep shooting.

Not sure I agree with that, but some classes and practice won't hurt.

Default Just a bit to add.

Thanks for the replies. I have a few more questions. I don't plan on being a pro. photographer but I want to have the level of skill that Steve-o and Sanspeur and RayinAk have. There photos are awesome. Is there a digital camera out there that produces some awesome photographs? I want great qaulity without any film. I currently use a Kodak DX6490 it does okay. I just want to have some great qaulity photos without going to school.

Here is an example of one of my photos

Get some good books and read. You need to understand common terms in photography (shutter speed, aperture opening, bracketing, etc. etc.) and the underlying concepts of light. Some knowledge of composition would help, as it would guide you as to what is pleasing to the eye. Then, practice, practice, practice...by putting the concepts into play. Enjoy!

Nowadays you can tech yourself quite a lot by practicing with whichever camera you have. For example, that's a nice photo of a horse. You can take that photo and make it look better with a computer program such as PhotoShop Elements or similar. In other words, learn everything there is to know about your camera, even if it's a "point-N-shoot" one, and also learn all there is to know about the software I mentioned above. After that, just practice and practice. There are some photo forums that are created for posting and getting feedback from other posters. I joined one os such forums, and folks there tell me what I dod wrong, and vice-versa. I am not a photographer, just like to take pictures, and I learn from others when they critique my photos.

Camera manufacturers sometimes have training classes to teach you about their cameras. For example, I use a Canon Rebel XT, and I can learn online how to use it and take great photos with it. Its a good idea to have the camera's manual with you when you read/see the lessons online, but as long as i have the camera with me I can read the instructions, and then turn the camera on and see with my own eyes what the lessons tell me.

Take a look:

Just remember, it's not the camera that makes the picture, it's the photographer. With digital photoshop is a must, learn to dodge and burn, and clone, and cropping is very important, learning photoshop I think helps make you a better photographer because you start to think more about the light. It's all about the light.
Your horse picture is very good by the way. I have a Canon 10D and love it. And good glass is also VERY important in your lens.

Before I comment...Your photo has lots of points of interest...The worn paint on the barn, the pushed out wire across the gate, not to mention the interest that beautiful horse is showing...Oh did I mention the sprinkle of snow on it's back?

JoshB, the pictures I have posted here were mostly taken with a Fuji S9100, not an SLR camera. I have only been at this hobby for three years and what I have learned mostly came with reading and understanding the terms in the book that came with my camera, plus info I have gathered online. Remember taking photos with a digital is practically free, so take lots while trying different settings...I have never taken any lessons, but I may do that.

Here are some basic rules of composition and how to apply them.

Rules of photo composition

I hope you don't mind, but here is how I would crop your image to conform more to the rule of thirds. I also clarified it a bit.
