About 20 minutes ago mine took a near direct hit from one of the best lightning bolts I've seen in a while. All external drives and networking equipment faired OK but the surge protect didn't protect the workstation. The UPS didn't even squeak. There's a smell of burnt electrical in the air so I guess I now have a legitimate reason to build a new box. What I just lost was five years old so now big loss and files are backed up so not so much harm done. Let the fun begin. My dear wife unplugged her system and now I'll never hear the end of this. Still I get the new one.

Get a roll of electrical wire from the store and use a match to get it a little hot and stick it inside the case 5 minutes before anyone else comes home. Just make sure there's a thunderstorm in progress. Now I can not advise that. Maybe part two of a bonus would be better advised.

All kidding aside, sorry to hear about the mishap. Makes me want to back up what I haven't backed up in awhile.

You guys will do anything to get new toys, won't you?
Seriously, I'm sorry to hear about your workstation. Your mishap reminds me that I need to burn some backup CDs soon. We get some scary thunderstorms around here too, though not quite as much lightning as Florida is known for.

You lost a computer that was on a UPS? Sorry to hear that.

I recommend doing what I did. Go to Office Depot and get that HP Pavillion Elite, QuadCore 6GB memory. It's on sale for $870 right now I think. You won't believe how fast it is doing Photoshop work. 6GB. No paging.

True no paging with the Canon digital files but what about the 2+ gig files from the large format? H'mmmm. I'll look and see what kind of expansion it has. Maybe raid esata would work. Before I do anything I'll see if I lost more than the power supply. If lucky maybe the power supply is all that got hit. After a shoot tomorrow over on the coast I'll take it apart for a look to see what all is melted.
