Is there ANYTHING you can't shoot extremely well, Kdog? I don't think so!
PLENTY!!! Deep space astrophotography, and weddings to name two. Although, I hope to conquer both of those some day as well. Thanks for the vote of confidence though.
EG - I do have a remote shutter release. You have a Panasonic too. What exactly does keeping the focus at infinity mean?
In the FZ50, after selecting manual focus, you would have to turn the manual focus ring counter clockwise a few times (as you look thru the camera) to set the focus at infiniti.
As for exposure length, you won't need it for more than 4-5s, unless you want several bursts (which can potentially overexpose the photograph). If you do plan on going longer, I will suggest going f/11. A downside to going longer would be running into camera's noise reduction logic (and often introduction of noise). I will recommend 4-5s, no more.
Another tip... good idea to include something in the foreground at times.
Here are some of my photos from last night... we're on vacation in Reno, and watched the fireworks outside our hotel (Nugget). I only have a point-and-shoot, but it has a fireworks setting I decided to try out - made for some VERY cool abstract shots! Nothing like the clear, high-quality pictures the rest of you got, but I think they're kinda neat anyway.
This one is just insane!
I think this is my favorite... it's now my desktop background, LOL
Looks like the galaxy.....
