Here are a couple of Oregon Sunstones (the state gem) that I dug up myself. I did not cut them, I don't have the patience for that.

These were shot using my Olympus Evolt E300 with a Macro lens and the macro extension, plus a light box.

Fairly unique to Oregon Sunstone (not to be confused with Mexican Sunstone which is not even gem quality material,) is what is called Schiller, AKA little flakes of copper that throw off sparkle. This causes a lot of the perceived flaws in the stones and for a long time degraded their acceptance.

These gems are actually becoming extremely popular and demand has drastically increased in the last four years or so. They range on color from a very common clear/pale yellow to orange, red, green and even extremely rare blue and purples. Another highly desirable trait is the ability to color change usually from green to red.

They're only found in three locations of Eastern Oregon, two of which are already fully claimed, but it's speculated that there may be a lot more locations out there one just needs to dig 10-20 feet or more through solid rock. As such it is one of the rarest gem stones around.
