The website Michigan Future detailed the net domestic migration of college-educated adults between 2007 and 2008 in the 10 most affluent U.S. metros per capita, plus metro Chicago (#11) and metro Pittsburgh (#16). Pittsburgh had a net gain of 5,659 college-educated adults -- more than metros Chicago and Minneapolis-St. Paul! So much for "brain drain."

The County is still losing population in the 65+ bracket (as expected--this is an ongoing ripple effect from the steel bust-related youth diaspora), and generally deaths outweighed births by an estimated 1389. But now that natural decline is being outweighed by in-migration--1997 total (1596 international, 401 domestic).

What we also need is for the college kids here to get married and have children to reverse our European like birth-death ratio. People seem to say we're like Europe in many ways; unfortunately this is one of the ways also. Also, I think the days of younger people thinking they have to leave Pittsburgh to do well are ending. While not representative of all young adults in the area, many of my friends would like to stay here after college and not move away.

Actually from this web site that track census estimates for any metro in the country, Pittsburgh, PA MSA Population and Components of Change. It said that we gained 1896 international migrants, and 1600 domestic migrants. It would be interesting to see where in the world and country these people are coming from in particular.

I don't doubt that many people are coming to Pittsburgh from Michigan, which has a horrible economy right now. I moved here from Michigan in 2007. Pittsburgh is one of the few bright spots for employment in the region.

Note that is for the Metro, and I was quoting Alleghney County estimates. Same basic story, though (except the County was more weighted to international).

Oh I see what you meant. I was just looking at the metro as a whole but it's great to see people moving here. I also think it's nice to see that unlike nearly all Northeastern and Rust Belt metro areas, we are also attracting native born Americans to come here also.
