I am sure that some of you drink or have frequented one of the many establishments across the city, so I was wondering what your favorite establishment is.

Mine would have to be the Headkeeper in Greensburg. It's a tapas bar and the best part is that they have over 300 (?) different imported beers to choose from, in addition to the usual domestic beers. If the adult beverages aren't your thing, you should at least try out their food. It is not what I would call your typical bar food and they even cook it right in front of you. They even have an outdoor bar and seating area which gets to be pretty busy during the evening and especially around college season.

D's in Regent Square. Partially that is just because we can walk to it from our house, but I also love the fact that it is a place with 1000 beers that nonetheless has universal appeal. Families with kids, young adults, seniors: everyone comes there.

I am a fan of the Rivertowne family of bars. They have the Pourhouse in Monroeville that brews their own beer, pubs in North Huntingdon and Verona, and a brand new pub on the North Shore. They always have a solid selection of fine beers and they have a great bar menu.

Elbow Room in Shadyside. We can walk to it from our house, it's a neighborhood place, decent food, good prices, nice atmosphere. It's the place we go when we get home and say, "feel like getting something to eat?" Truly one of those places where "everybody knows your name." There are probably hundreds of similar places around.

I used to go to D's all the time, but it's just too crowded unless you go for dinner at 4pm. And when you finally do get a table you get the stink-eye from the people waiting by the door until you leave.

We just went to the Rivertowne on the North Shore for the first time--it is quite nice. I went to The Elbow Room many times back in the day, although I have a sentimental attachment to Harris Grill (that is where my wife and I first met). Some other old favorites of mine were Doc's in Shadyside, the Squirrel Cage in Squirrel Hill, and Silky's in Squirrel Hill (the last is still my favorite sports bar in Pittsburgh).

I know that D's can get crowded, but it tends not to be an issue for us because we go at off-peak times (like right when it opens at 11:00am for lunch, or for a very early dinner around 5:00pm).

ART'S TAVERN on Penn Avenue, in the Strip, hands down....a.k.a "the little yellow brick building". You go to Art's, you more than likely are NOT coming out sober since they automatically give you DOUBLES..

I'll go with D's also, for the reasons Brian mentioned (though walking distance is a stretch for us with the kids), and also because I found out last week that 2 of the servers who work there went to my high school in Ohio. We figured that out because I was trying out the Rustbelt beers that are brewed in Youngstown. I also like Rivertowne, Fatheads, and even some national chains like Hofbrauhaus and Rock Bottom.

I like the ambiance of Piper's on the South Side. It really feels like a pub, not just an American knockoff of a pub.

On the high end, The Gandy Dancer, nothing special, hard wood everywhere, piano player, a great joint.

When on a budget, Five Fools in the North Hills.
