Guys, we have both a legal immigration and illegal immigration forums where you can discuss all things immigration related. Here, I'd like everyone to focus on the topic and Pittsburgh in general.
Yac.

We have these great institutions here. I would not want to see a large influx though of people from a complety different culture however because that has been shown to cause problems. Slow and steady is the way to do it now.
maybe, but highly unlikely. I'm not railing against hispanics. I have no problem with white immigrants, should they want to come here. many cities have a substantial russian immigrant population, and yes, they have also brought the russian mafia with them. does that mean they are all criminals? Italians certainly brought the mob with them. is that what you meant byt cultures that have been shown to cause problems? or are their problems okay? I don't see any proof that hispanics have been shown to cause problems.
I'd love to see immigrants from those places as well but what makes you think they'll come? and why is it bad to have new traditions simply because the immigrants are coming from somewhere else? You'd be hardpressed to argue that Italian and Polish traditions have always been Pittsburgh traditions. in fact, they were highly discriminated against by the existing population when they came. after the whiskey rebellion, many of the region's "natives" fled to kentucky, taking their whiskey making traditions with them. hard to escape the conclusion that those are okay because they are white countries while most immigrants from Mexico are brown. at least Mexicans are catholic which means the churches can find reuse. I agree that slow and stead is good, but it wouldn't hurt Pittsburgh is it were a little less slow. I'm not advocating a return to when Pittsburgh was a third foreign born but certainly 10% isn't an absurd number and is hardly going to make Pittsbrugh like miami.
btw, japanese peopel can be racist as well. there's no requirement that one be white to be a racist.

Cincinnati leaders visit Pittsburgh to study its comeback | cincinnati.com | Cincinnati.Com

Quote:
Pittsburgh and Cincinnati have a lot in common: both are situated on the Ohio River, built on steep hills, with two pro sports stadiums on their riverfronts and economies with roots in manufacturing.

On Monday, 60 business and community leaders will travel to Pittsburgh for a three-day crash course on what that city is doing right, with the aim of bringing some of that back to Cincinnati. They'll also share some of Cincinnati's best practices in what's become known as the Leadership Exchange, an annual sharing of ideas and networking among business leaders in Cincinnati and similarly situated cities.
