There have been winters where our temps hover around 72 degrees and summers where its also 72 degrees and dry ( no bugs here as well). I live in Hermosa Beach so the weather is always cool and fresh, no need for AC.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Question :where does the Hill District extend to ? Limits? What about Downtown living?

So this is a useful resource (a clickable map of Pittsburgh neighborhoods):

Pittsburgh Map

The Hill is what is listed on that map as Crawford Roberts, Bedford Dwellings, Middle Hill, Terrance Village, and the Upper Hill. It is hard to miss if you are here in person, though, because it really is up on a hill with very steep sides, except where it slopes down toward Downtown, and there Mellon Arena and its parking lots serve as a barrier.

Downtown (called the Central Business District on that map) has been booming in recent years as a residential neighborhood. It still lacks a few amenities, most notably a grocery store, and people still complain it gets relatively quiet after the work crowd leaves. Nonetheless, you can't beat it for public transit connections, there are a bunch of bars, restaurants, theaters, and so forth, and if you work anywhere Downtown it should be walkable (Downtown is very compact). In fact you can walk from Downtown to the North Shore (where the stadiums, the casino, a few museums and such are located), the South Side (a big nightlife district), and the Strip (a market district).

Anyway, if you want more info about Downtown living, this is a good place to start:

I love how :sarcasim: Pittsburgh'ers immediately become overly pessimistic to anyone seeking to move here from a Bigger City.... like why on earth would anyone move to the Burgh from LA...

Does anyone ever stop to think a person would find the more "realistic" lifestyle of Pittsburgh refreshing compared to LA, not having that feeling always being in a competition with the next person...That in Pittsburgh you dont have a bunch of Heidi Montagues/Paris Hiltons walking around???? No offense to LA PittNewbie but I was in LA for 2 weeks for work and while nice for a visit for vacation the place is far to Pretentious, Superficial, Fake for me to ever live there. I get tired of it in certain parts of NYC and LA it seems like its everywhere from Hollywood to East LA...

FYI ....Although I am an LA native...I have also lived elsewhere - Madrid Spain, San Juan Puerto Rico, San Francisco , Houston, Miami/Fort Lauderdale, NYC , Mexico City and Sao Paulo Brazil.

So I can handle change.

Just never lived in a colder climate except a very brief stint in NYC. I am a bit concerned about the lack of sunshine and how isolated Pittsburgh seems to be.

Hopefully I can bring the sun with me and some California quirkiness with me.

Honestly, the cold climate isn't really that bad and the snow we've had in the past few years (aside from this one) has been pretty tame. However, one thing that will be a major issue is the lack on sunshine especially when looking at those cities you've lived in. There's no doubt that will be rough and will take alot of getting used to.

I've lived hear all my life and I still haven't gotten used to the lack of sunshine.

Downtown living is more of a 30s scene. There's a huge arena marking the border between downtown and the hill district. So you'll obviously know where your prospective apartments are located.

There's a nice little strip along 9th street that has a few bars (including a "Sharp Edge" that specializes in delicious belgian beers).

I don't really notice the relative cloudiness, but I'm not particularly sensitive to such things and I grew up in a fairly similar area (Michigan).

Pittsburgh is indeed the only major city in its immediate area, but it is actually pretty close to lots of other cities once you start looking a few hours away. When I first got here I was constantly making weekend trips to DC, NYC, back home to Michigan, and so forth.

I am excited about moving to Pittsburgh!!!

I make friends easily so I dont think that will be an issue. I have already scouted two churches to attend (spiritual centers) and signed up with meetup.com for cultural and outdoor events.

Now for the biggie...what about gyms in the Downtown area?

There is none, zip, zilch, nada. You'll have to educate yourself on the PA LCB. You'll laugh.
