We just bought and moved into a house in the East End, and need some work done. We would appreciate recommendations for:

An electrician. The house still has fuses. The work will require a new panel, rewiring, new circuits, etc.

A roofer. Last roof put on 26 years ago with 25 year shingles. The roof at a minimum needs a thorough inspection, and maybe replacement.

A general contractor to gut and re-do the kitchen. Our preference is to work with one or two persons directly; in other words, not a big general contractor. My wife is an architect.

Thanks in advance for any and all recommendations.

We've used Commonwealth Heating and Remodeling, based in Monroeville ((412) 243-4200), over and over again for general contracting on the two houses we have owned in Regent Square, and also have recommended them to many people. It is a smaller outfit which has been working in the East End forever, they aren't looking to make a killing on each job, and they really know these houses. You'd be working with the owner, Les, directly.
