I moved away from Pittsburgh 5 years ago and I am now looking to relocate back in about 2 weeks. If I get the job I want, I will be working in the city. I would like to find a family-friendly place to rent for myself, wife, and 8 year old daughter. Most of the places I have found seemed to be tailored toward college life and that definitely is not something I want.

My daughter will probably go to Pittsburgh Public as there are some excellent elementary schools if you are in the right area.

If anyone has had a good renting experience within the city please let me know.

It is tough to completely avoid college students in the nicer Pittsburgh neighborhoods with rentals, since this is basically an overgrown university town these days. But the nicer neighborhoods in the Allderdice feeder system, such as Squirrel Hill and Greenfield, are attracting lots of young families, and the local university scene is more grad/professional/staff/faculty than undergrads.

Honestly, you're more than likely going to have to commute! With the amount of colleges, institutes and universities within the city, the majority of the neighborhoods immediately over the bridges cater to college living.

Since you've lived here before, you're familiar with some of the neighborhoods. I would look at houses for rent in those neighborhoods, either here Post-Gazette.com Real Estate or here pittsburgh apts/housing for rent classifieds - craigslist

Good luck. I really hope it is not the job I think it is.

RENT for 2 yrs minimum, look for a feeder pattern to Colfax, Minadeo, or if you have some German heritage Linden. (Mike Tomlin's kids go there)
