So, chances are high that everyone will let this place rot from here on out. Where is the community outrage? I see WTAE and the other two are "mining" for Emmy nominations, so of course there is freshly-picked outrage on the news. But where are the Monroevillians at? Where are all the east suburbians at? For being a city that s̶e̶l̶l̶s̶ prides itself on the whole "tough, hardworking, blue collar mentality", we sure do run away from our problems at the first sign of trouble. How many towns now have we left behind because "we don't have to deal with this sort of thing"? This is what a major city deals with. Crime. We beg to be in the same conversation as Chicago and New York all the time but when things get tough, your next Cranberry opens for business. I for one think it's cowardly to sit here and say "That mall went downhill, we avoid it". It's not even the mall, it's the principal of the whole thing. Like, have pride in where you chose to live or where you were born and keep it from turning into a ghetto, don't leave and give them another reason to expand the highways with our tax dollars.
You're acting like this is a problem unique to Pittsburgh, and you might even be exaggerating the mentality. Despite Monroeville Mall having a seedy reputation for the last 20 years, its storefronts are still nearly fully occupied, and it still gets plenty of business. If people were that scared of it, it would have died by now.

You're half-right. Malls all across the United States need better security, but I'm not talking about bogus "mall security" either. They need more police presence.

Yes, we must live in a police state! We must be safe! We must have police all over the place with machine guns! They need to shoot to kill as soon as there is any issues. Safety is the highest priority! Metal detectors upon entry. Frisking is allowed randomly to ensure the safety of all the happy shoppers. Strip search is another option! Of course privacy will be ensured, so you can gleefully shop in a safe environment!

Poor education and the biggest wealth inequality in history got your society down?

Here's a solution: add more cops!

Bill of Rights and Later Amendments

See Amendment #2. Protect yourself when nobody is around to do it for you.

I agree, but if I feel the need to be armed because one mall has a higher risk I'll go somewhere else instead. But Monroeville is on the other side of town so I have no real reason to go there anyhow.

I can just imagine what would have happened if bystanders who were "packing" had drawn their guns and started shooting back Saturday night. The carnage among innocent victims would have been incredible. It's a nice idea in theory, but a disaster in practice.

If one can't get out of the way of being shot and wants to live, one needs to shoot back or may never have the chance to do it again.

Personally, I'm glad I don't live in a Mad Max movie. Or contemporary Somalia. I don't know about you.

That comparison is funny stuff.

It's a crazy world and I'm certainly glad the 2nd Amendment exists.
