Forget Primanti's - the official Pittsburgh food item, in my humble opinion, is the fish Sandwich.

Nowhere in the country have I seen such a collection of fine restaurants, local cafes, churches, fire departments, and dive bars that all claim to have "the best fish sandwich in town".

Here's a good article:

Quote:
When it comes to regional culinary traditions, there is the lofty -- San Francisco sourdough bread -- and the lowly -- Buffalo wings. Pittsburgh's specialty may be the fish sandwich.
The Friday fish habit - Pittsburgh Business Times

The contest seems to involve having the largest portion of fish - the more it sticks out of the bun, the better. The bun is really just kind of a placeholder haha.

I always tell visitors to try a fish sammich, and they are never disappointed.

It seems that the tradition comes from the city's large blue-collar catholic population. They wanted a fish dish for friday that was portable and affordable.

This has been discussed a little bit on here

but Primanti's always seems to come to mind when discussing local food. Certainly there is room for more discussion on this Pittsburgh icon!

Thoughts? Favorite places to get a fish sammich?

Here are mine:

-Original Oyster house in Market Square (I assume they survived the construction).

-Wholey's in the strip

-Smiling Moose, Carson Street

Maybe somebody can post some pics of their fish sammich?

I don't care for fish, and Friday is the best day of the week for meat.

Used to like the one at Jimmy's Post Tavern on Smithfield - and actually, even moreso the one across the street that's gone now.

Epiphany Church Fish Fry (next to CONSOL Energy Center), even though the price seems to go up every year.
