I turn mine to pilot only when away, can't be bothered to actually relight the thing each time.
Often it's only for a few days anyway. Come back after, say, 4 days, it's STILL hot! I guess it helps that the unit is not in an uninsulated basement or such.
My winter gas bill is only about $100 most of the time, maybe $120 or $130 if it gets really cold or the gas price was a little higher that year. Small house, well insulated, good southern exposure.
Electric bill is a little crazy, hits $150 in summer, still about $80 in winter. But i guess those spreads with the electric vs gas roughly equal out.
