I agree. Those ingredients are too strong for the subtle tastes or sushi, unless you are talking about eel. That is pretty strong or Mackerel, which might have a tiny bit of scallion on top, because that is a strong fish.

I have this odd feeling Wholey's isn't for the sushi purist, but I haven't been there. I guess I could just say, a piece of salmon on a rice ball please. Nothing extra and I will add my own wasabi/soy. I like basic sushi because I love fish and don't' want to cover up that flavor. Mint sounds horrible because it would overpower the fish. Maybe that is the idea down there? Even if it is, it might be good if you custom order everything plain.

Not a sushi fan, but I wouldn't be suprised that they would use out of the oridianary ingredients (in this case onions or mint on sushi.) Many cuisines use unique ingredients that are different.

Yoinks, sorry you didn't enjoy it, Jay. We got some spicy tuna, vegetable and Philadelphia maki, and Andy didn't put mint or strange sauces on any of the three!

I think it's an issue where every roll is different. I personally can't stand cream cheese on sushi and would never order the Philly one. But I also wouldn't judge the place on one roll that I didn't like either.

IIRC, it's their NY roll that has cream cheese (I was mostly reading the overhead menu while he was making my order), but I agree with you on cream cheese (and onions, too). I didn't have just one roll, though. I had three. My order came to around $15. I would say that for that much money, I'll go to PAFCO for sushi, but the truth is I like the rest of PAFCO's menu more than any sushi anyone could make. And at lunchtime, it costs less than what I spent yesterday at Wholey's. So Wholey's isn't a place I'm likely to return to for lunch in the Strip.

Please understand, BTW, that I am not attacking you or your taste buds. I simply happen not to agree with you that this was the best sushi in Pgh. It's not personal.

Sushi is vinegared rice.

Everything else is a topping.

I did notice some mint going on other people's orders, so, yeah, I'm sure you're right that it depends on the roll.

The Philly roll has cream cheese too. We definitely just have different tastes; it was my favorite of the three that I had. I think cream cheese with sushi is delicious. Then again, I really like onions too, haha, so maybe I'm of a minority persuasion here.

...I also like mint. I must be a sushi philistine. The only other of the mentioned PGH sushi that I've had is Chaya, and if my next visit to Andy's is as pleasing to me as the first, he'll definitely beat them in my book.

I'm pretty sure sushi is the combination of the rice and the other ingredients, and the rice itself has its own name (shari).

There's cream cheese in the Philly roll too, and trust me I'm not taking offense... It's not like I make the Sushi or anything.

If you ordered 3 rolls and the total came out to $15 then you ordered some of the cheaper $5 rolls. It's not a surprise that they weren't as good as you expected.

According to menus, sushi is the raw fish with rice, while sashimi is just the raw fish. I have also read that sushi evolved from plain-old fish preserved in a salty medium, i.e. soy sauce, and that it somehow changed to become unpreserved fish with soy sauce as a sort of condiment.
