My wife and I are looking to retire in this area. We would like a home with acreage but not far from modern conveniences. Budget 300-350k. Any advise would be appreciated. Also, what are the winters like. I love snow...

I would say look for a place in the Greensburg area, lots of opportunities with cultural amenities, shopping, recreation, etc. The winter resorts are also a half-hour away. You shouldn't have a problem finding a home in that price range either, especially on the outskirts of town. You could even get something really nice for 250k. The winters around here are also mild compared to the mountains, most days it will just be cold and if it snows, it can vary but January-March are the snowiest months around here.

I believe Ligonier may be a good choice. It's about half an hour or less to Seven Springs or Hidden Valley, and there are numerous shopping areas iaround Greensburg, about 20 miles or so to the west. It's about a 1 1/2 hour drive to downtown Pittsburgh, depending upon traffic, especially the awful Parkway East.
Snowfall will be a bit more than the Pittsburgh metro area, and temperatures a few degrees colder; even more so as you go up the mountains near Seven Springs, etc.

You could probably buy a whole small town in Jefferson county with that kind of money.

Default property taxes?

Can someone give me an idea of property taxes in this area?

Depends. A quick search on the multi-list shows that in Fayette, Westmoreland and Somerset counties you'd have taxes in the $2,200 to $5,500 range. Fayette's the cheapest. These are for homes in the range you suggested with 10 acres to keep things simple.
