Park Place (Pittsburgh, Wilkinsburg, Braddock: home, neighborhoods, school)

I have a question. I will be moving to Park Place (S.Braddock Ave.) in a couple of weeks. I was on the City Council's website and couldn't find which district it was. I was told that it was District 9 (Ricky Burgess' district.) Is this right? Is Park Place actually considered a part of Point Breeze?

i always thought it was the result of an over-zealous block of home owners who simply wanted to create their own neighborhood.

Looks like we'll be neighbors!

Park Place is actually considered it's own neighborhood. I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing one of the smallest in the city.

I think the location will be nice and convenient for me. Since I'm a busser I can walk to a bunch of bus stops (near the 61A, 61B and the Penn Ave. busses in Wilkinsburg.) I'll be near a park, an indie movie house, restaraunts, etc! I can't wait to get out of East Pittsburgh, lol!

The Pittsburgh part of Park Place (depending on your definitions, there is a bit in Wilkinsburg as well) is indeed in Point Breeze according to the "official" City boundaries. The name isn't a recent invention, however, as demonstrated by the fact it is carved into the Park Place school (which is no longer a school, but might be again if it is acquired by the Environmental Charter School). You can see a reference to something called the "Park Plan" in this 1904 map, which also designates the Park Place School:

Then by this 1911 map, the same plan is being called "Park Place":

Note that Park Place as typically defined today would include more than just the plan designated as Park/Park Place in these old maps. Finally, if you poke around the City website (which for some reason isn't working just now), you will find references to "Point Breeze and Park Place", used as a name for what is officially Point Breeze on the maps.

You know how the names of the neighborhoods are on the street signs at all major intersections? While standing at the intersection of Forbes and Braddock, if you look at the street signs on the, I believe, north east corner of the street, it has "Park Place" on the sign. That's why I've always thought it was considered an actual neighborhood. Apparently not though.

That's part of why I tend to put scare quotes around "official" when noting the "official" definitions of the City's neighborhoods--if you look around you can find lots of contrary indicators.
