I have recently moved back to the area (Moon Twp.) with my NJ wife and growing up in Westmoreland County I never really wanted to drive into the city. Unfortunately my sister-in-law from NYC is coming for the first time this weekend and my wife wants to show off Pittsburgh. That means I have to drive into the city on Sunday and I'm already dreading it.

Anyway, my wife wants to go to the Strip District, the Cathedral of Learning, the Andy Warhol Museum, and Mt. Washington. My question is, how is traffic on Sundays and are the above places good places to go on Sundays? Thanks in advance.

The strip will be crowded as usual, but not unmanageable. Oakland is quiet, and even free parking can be found. Just watch for traffic and construction especially on the parkway and you should be okay.

I don't understand your fears at all. Getting into the city is incredibly simple and easy during non-rush hour times. Mon-Fri 6:30-8:30 am and 4:00-6:00 pm is rush hour. Every other time isn't and traffic is at a minimum. Pittsburgh is practically a town so it's not a massive ordeal to get around. It's not NYC or anything.

Here's what I would do:

Take the Fort Pitt tunnel into the city (it is one of the best views of the Burgh). Take one of the exits right after the bridge that goes right and find your way to go over the Smithfield Bridge. Mt. Washington is right up the hill. Then maybe go check out Carson Street on the South Side. Then go over to the Strip District (10 am-2 pm on a sunny weekend day is a good time to walk around there). Try to hit up Pamela's or Deluca's for breakfast. If you are feeling more like lunch then do Primanti's. If you feel like some swanky shopping then hit up Shadyside or Squirrel Hill (to be honest, she'll be disappointed in those neighborhoods being from New York where everything is 100 times bigger). You can go up to Schenley Park for a walk. Maybe check out the Arboretum. I foresee no major parking problems in any of these neighborhoods. Sure, you might have to circle around a bit, but it's no biggie.

I actually think that looking at the Cathedral of Learning and going to the Warhol Museum is pretty boring in my opinion. But, that's just me.

If you want to tour the Nationality Rooms at the Cathedral:

The Nationality Rooms: address/location

For the view, sure, go to Grandview down towards the eastern end near the Mon Incline where those round platforms are built out. It's an unusual close up view of a city skyline. But I suggest also hitting the West End Overlook for a nice Point-on view of the city. This is especially good later in the afternoon when the sun gets lower, but good anytime.

Driving in should be no trouble on Sundays as long as you are not hitting something like Steelers traffic for a home game. Check the schedule on your weekend. It will only really affect, say, that part coming in via the Ft Pitt tunnel, could create a backup similar to but not as bad as typical rush hour.

The Warhol is not a personal fave. I've been in there a few times, and I think it's an important museum and all, but not really to my taste. Certainly worth going once if someone wants to go. Even if you hate it, that's one of the reactions art may provoke.

The Strip is fine, but I don't think that'll impress a New Yorker much. Not as crowded on Sunday as Saturday but getting closer.

Oh and whatever you do do not eat at one of those places on Grandview Ave, Mt Washington. Yeah, the view is good, but the food ain't. Enjoy the view for free and eat better and/or cheaper somewhere else. Don't try to impress the NYer with food; it won't work, esp with the more limited selection of stuff that's open on Sunday.

I third Andy Warhol being boring and overrated, the Mt Washington food not being that good, and getting into the city not being a big deal on a sunday.

Certainly your sister-and-law can't expect you to give her a full-on tour seeing as you just moved here.. maybe you can send her links of some stuff to do and see what interests her?

As an alternative to the Warhol, I like the Mattress Factory a lot, but it seems to really be hit or miss depending on the person and their tastes.

Default Strip District Food

I highly recommend the taco stand in front of Reyna Food's near Penn and 20th St. The only potential issue is that there are not any tables, so you have to stand and eat in the street. Though to me, this is part of the appeal.

I like the Warhol, but I think for the best bang for your museum buck you're better off with the Art/Natural History museums in Oakland (two for the price of one!) or the History Center in the Strip.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I think we may go for a long drive up to Ohiopyle on Friday to see the foliage, the zoo on Saturday, and then Mt. Washington on Sunday evening. That sounds good enough. I'm not going to drive all around the city if it's really not worth it. I just haven't driven into there many times and I really don't need the hassle!!
