It's not unique to this area at all, like many things we tend to attribute as being Pittsburgh weird , although I wouldn't be surprised to find that it's a little more prevalent here given the topography. The rivers and hills and such create real physical barriers which in turn affect the actions of some residents.

Certain aspects (more likely the never been x far away from home or outside the state or whatever) can be economic as well as or instead of being insular or incurious. Some folks just can't afford to go too far.

If I had to limit myself to one of the boroughs, that would be it. Central Park, SoHo, the Village, Broadway.....love it all.

In my experience of 26 years in the City of Pittsburgh South region... I never ventured North or East until I was into my 20s except to go to the north shore, ross park mall, meuseum or the zoo. Being from the South city we just never ventured east or north ... Moroeville might as well of been Texas... It is strange and I noticed most of my peers were the same way. In recent year's I've seen some of the noth neighborhoods which are no more than 15-20 minutes from my house and realized I had never seen them before... I think most Pittsburghers tend to stay on their side of the river.

I guess my wife was right when she said she thinks we've enjoyed more things in the city than most people who have lived here all their lives. Very sad.

I can understand why people from the South Hills might not venture into the North Hills for eating or shopping when there are similar amenities closer to home. It does blow my mind when people haven't experienced things unique to the area, like people who've lived here for years but have never been to the Zoo, or the Carnegie Museums, or the Strip on a Saturday morning, or the Three Rivers Arts Festival.

I've got friends who live scattered around town, and my family comes to visit regularly, so I try to plan stuff for us to do. When my parents come up in November we're going to see the Vatican Exhibit at the History center, and I got tickets for the River City Brass Band. I think a lot of people, no matter where they live, take their city for granted. It's interesting to treat Pittsburgh like you're a tourist.

This baffles me. It seems that just over the course of 26 years of regular life, you'd eventually run into reasons that would bring you to other areas of the city. I've only lived here 4 years, and I have a friend that lives in the north hills, one in Monroeville, my family is in the south hills, and I live near Robinson. So in just my small social circle, I've got the whole greater Pgh area covered. lol

I've done most of the attraction type things in the city so I'm good with that and even did at a young age, but it bother's me that I've never been to falling water, when people come from around the world to visit it and it's right up the road so to speak.

I was thinking more in terms of people that don't even have your exceptions. The fact that you went to Ross Park Mall from the south already makes you different than the really extreme examples of not crossing rivers or hills I had in mind. Surely you ran into people who said "Ross Park, what'd you go all the way up there for?"
