It's too good of a weekend to try to make us all depressed!

I know, isn't it depressing! But these buildings have haunted me ever since I moved here. I can't walk down Smithfield without thinking about the Old City Hall and Post Office.

But the reason I made this video is because I want people to learn from the past, and see that knocking down beautiful old buildings doesn't accomplish anything.

I agree it is depressing, but in an important way--well done!

That post office looked amazing! Would love to see that one still standing.

Me too, I wish there was a way to bring back the Post office, City hall, and North Side Market House. Those are the ones that kill me the most! But at least the City Hall and Post Office buildings that we have (on Grant Street) are very attractive.

Though I like Gateway Center (I love mid-century architecture the way you love what came before WWII), I wish the other buildings were still here. When I lived in DC, I walked past this building twice a day, the home of the National Trust for Historic Preservation: PreservationNation Homepage - National Trust for Historic Preservation

In a wicked concidence, there was a nasty-looking development-ette of ten or twelve very lavish suburban-style "townhomes" about three houses down on P Street NW. I just hated those houses. When I walked my dog in the alley, I would let him **** on the posts on which their car corrals were built.

Anyway, I gave everybody rep points.

And another thing, A.A., I really liked the music you chose, sad and wistful combined with a modern, aggressive beat. It really brought home the spirit of your pictures.

Excellent tribute to architectural gems lost, Allegheny. I too was shocked when I first saw photos of the lost Post Office and City Hall on Smithfield St. If one has any sense of appreciation for cities at all, the realization that they were intentially demolished can make one sick. Adding insult to injury is the awful crap that replaced those-one-of-a-kind, never-to-be-repeated monuments to Pittsburgh's 19th and 20th century industrial supremacy.

Your video illustrates that Pittsburgh has lost more than it has retained. Now, compared to Tampa, when I come to Pittsburgh for a visit, the extreme density of the urban fabric is still vastly enjoyable and interesting. Newer gems like the PPG Place enhance Downtown. But, to think if only half of those historic buildings had been saved....
