It looks like Clint Hurdle is the choice. He has to be an improvement over comatose John Russell. I predict the Pirates to surprise next summer. They have a lot of young talent.

Clint Hurdle is a great addition...Being a long time Texas Rangers fan, who just transplanted here in Pittsburgh recently, I can definitely vouche for this guy...

hopefully, he can get the Pirates' bats swinging...

Hurdle had a shot at the Mets managing job and took himself out of the running to come to Pittsburgh. The reason he chose Pittsburgh is interesting and should make you feel good about your city, IMO.

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but he also took his name out of the running for the Mets job because it's widely speculated/known that Terry Collins is the front-runner and that the Mets had about two-three guys ahead of him. All media sob stories aside, he basically road the Mets situation for as long as possible before he took the sure thing...he's only here because he finally confirmed that he wouldn't be getting the Mets job.

Same thing happened with who SHOULD have been our manager: Eric Wedge. We interviewed him immediately after firing Russell, he dodged us and bought time, and finally he ended up in Seattle as a result of his stalling to accept our offer. Nobody wants to manage for us and rightfully so...ownership is a travesty and our front office is made up of nothing but yes-men and idiots trying to earn a profit for Bob Nutting in exchange for their hollow jobs.

We messed up terribly by letting Wedge get away, Hurdle isn't anywhere near as good but definately is a nice way to rebound. The only thing that worries me is that Hurdle had 7 losing seasons in Colorado as manager compared to his one winning season/WS bid. I like him and am glad that he's here, but I'm not sold at all. Big improvement, and he's a real manager with experience coaching younger teams...I just don't know if he's really all that good at it. We'll see. I would love to see somebody firey actually stand up to Nutting and Coonely as opposed to happily collecting a paycheck, that's basically what Russell did and everybody knows it. Hurdle is the closest thing that we've ever had to a legit manager who cares about winning, maybe even enough to throw Nutting under the bus in a blaze of glory at the expense of his own job. It might be some serious fun to watch Hurdle's press conferences if his team gets dismantled or short changed by Nutting like usual...

I just wonder how important the baseball manager is? Baseball is a funny sport. It is a team sport but so much of the play at a given moment comes down to an individual.
