I'm shocked we're not hearing too much out of SEPTA ...... Last time before I-80 was proposed..both SEPTA and PAT were joined together in this fight....Now after I-80 was shot down...you're only hearing from PAT...Did Septa miraculously solves its problem???? or is it about to get back into this fight....

According to SEPTA's website, SEPTA | SEPTA Board Approves Fiscal Year 2011 Budgets

They have a $110 million deficit in their 2011 budget and had to slash 20 projects.

ridership gains in recent years have allowed SEPTA to keep service cuts at bay, leaving most of the pain on the capital side for now...make no mistake though, a couple years of [increased]deferred maintenance will bleed to the operating side. SEPTA is less poorly run but much like PAT, the unions always get what they want (last strike was met with Brady and Rendell "finding money" to resolve their demands...kind of goes to show it doesn't matter what mgmt does...the unions know the real power isn't transit mgmt but politicians).

Its official: Port Authority board approves fare hike, big service cut

Unanimous vote by the board. Ugh, I feel sick.

I hope Bland, the union, and the government are happy now.

Pathetic.

But that's OK. At least we still have our sports teams (gag)

Tax people in the middle of the state to pay for Pittsburgh's union problems. That is how politicians and administrators think around here.

Wow that article is bologna... they write as if tolls on I80 were already in place and the government got rid of them thus eliminating PAT funding... PAT was hoping to inact that to use those funds... they never existed... Plus not one mention of other ways PAT could possibly cut the deficiet I.E. cutting salaries and benefits.

It's funny. I keep hearing rumors that Steve Bland basically is telling the heads of the union that even if they would get all/the majority of the funding (which I doubt would happen anyway), that he is still planning on major cuts. Keep in mind these are rumors from PAT employees (huge grain of salt). 2 out of 5 garages are being shut down. 500 employees cut. Pretty drastic for their operation.

"We'll have about 50 neighborhoods and communities that are served by public transportation that won't have any form of service,” said Port Authority CEO Steve Bland. “So, again, this is not about efficiency or improving operations. This is really going to cut into the meat and bone of the system. We've seen data studies generated by the Southwestern Pa. Commission that says congestion impacts particularly in the downtown and Oakland areas will be significant."
