Anything over $10 an hour is an excellent wage in a city where you can buy a liveable house for $10,000.

What does a 10,000 house look like , kept in mind in my region the average house starts at 360,000. Is it a tiny shack house? 10$ an hr is ok , but you should really go for jobs with 15-20$ an hr.

$10,000 will buy you a livable but dumpy row house in an unfashionable neighborhood in Pittsburgh. $360,000 will get you an incredibly nice house in a prestigious neighborhood here.

Could you please point us to some ads for livable houses that cost $10,000 (that are in Pgh, not Detroit)? I'd love to see some.

All you have to keep in mind is "livable" is a highly subjective term. But it is possible, depending upon your standards of livable. Certainly if you go up a ways from the $10k but well under $100k you can cover most standards of livable even in some less iffy neighborhoods.

If you're really talking average house (as in average of all of them) is around $360k, here the average is I believe about 1/3 of that, something in the low 100s.

The pay is above that (and not just "slightly" above). If I'm willing to do this AND a second job to live my dream life in Pittsburgh then why criticize me for it. What did NoVA truly offer besides cul-de-sacs, anyways?
It's just that it's clear that you are running into what everyone warned you of, and you decided to ignore. In most cases you WON'T make as much as NoVA.

Sure you escaped the boring old NoVA suburb, but now you have to work two jobs to live in a neighborhood where people don't respect their property or care about it's value, deal with people that drive like a-holes and don't even realize it cause it's the norm (this happens in the rich neighborhoods, too, btw), etc.

BTW, my experience is that finding a job interview and finding a job are entirely different things. Companies are being picky because they can be. They are interviewing way more candidates than they used to because there are so many out there, and they know they can take their time without the candidates getting snapped up by another company. So, don't think because you have a couple interviews lines up, that you are good to go.

A belated congratulations on the move!

And don't worry about the naysayers (not that you appear to be in any danger of that). Speaking as part of a two-transplant household, Pittsburgh tends to reward a little patience when it comes to careers, compensation, and so on. Opportunities will come up, and eventually you will be able to make whatever life for yourself that you want--and of course the life that you want may not involve maximizing your potential income, which some people will never get, but that is their problem.

RR I don't know why people rain on your parade. I read your messages with much interest and I applaud you for all of your initiatives, enthusiasm and open mind. If anything I need some of your enthusiasm and fresh perspective on things. It's wonderful you can walk to downtown. Your parents should be so proud of you! If more people walked in this country we wouldn't have the weight problem and the diabetes that is out of control. Just follow your heart. If it makes you happy don't listen to anyone.
I am an avid biker too. Look here for maps Bike Pittsburgh, Bicycle Advocacy, Safety and Community in Pittsburgh »
It's really wonderful. When i am short in time I just start biking at the jail, cross over the hot metal bridge, go down to station square and back to where I stared from. My favorite trail is the Panhandle, but the one that starts in MkKeessport and goes along the river is absolutely fantastic too. In the fall the foliage is incredible and my favorite spot is a rest area built on a camping site that sits next to a cemetery. I always wonder if those people camping there see ghosts at night
Keep up the good work and I honestly wish you the best of luck.

RR, I also wish you the best of luck and am happy for you that you made your move. You're young, you're unencumbered with things that could hold other people down to a particular location, and I think you've done the right thing. Have fun exploring.
