We will be attending an event at the Consol Energy Center in February and I am researching hotels. My first thought was the DoubleTree for its proximity to the arena, but I have been reading quite a mix of reviews about this place. Many people have commented on the dated furnishings and the too small bathrooms. It would be nice to be able to walk to the arena, but not at the expense of having a less than quality hotel.

We have stayed at Double Trees elsewhere and they have been nice, but some of the reviews of this particular hotel have not been very favorable.

Anybody have any first hand knowledge with this hotel, in particular their king suites? Or, have a better suggestion for a nice hotel in Pittsburgh? I don't mind paying approx. $200 per night or so but not interested in $250+ per night. (Prefer a newer hotel or if it is older, then recent renovations.) No bed bugs!!

Any replies would be appreciated.

The Omni Wlliam Penn is quite nice, and just a short walk from Consol.

The new Cambria Suites just opened right next to Consol Energy.

I just checked Cambria Suites. They are asking for rates starting at $229.00 per night. That suprises me that it is so high. FYI, February may be the slowest month for Pittsburgh Downtown hotels. This means that the rates will be low. Pittsburgh has a compact downtown, so to me everything is walkable to Consol Energy. This is not like being in Philly near Penn and having to walk to South Phillly to the Spectrum. I say try Hotwire if you are flexible. Look for Downtown hotels and you will get a room at a three or four star for $100.00 or even less. They are begging to fill those rooms and will make some great compromises to do so. You should also try the dot coms like Expedia, Orbitz, and Travelocity.

As mentioned, should be slow. I checked one weekend in Feb direct with Omni, and they have advance purchase at $150. It's not significantly less convenient to the arena vs Doubletree.

My personal way of dealing with it would be to blind bid on Priceline for 4-star and above properties. Hits at this level in the past have been the Westin Convention Center, Omni and Renaissance. There's a good likelihood that you could get one of these for under $100/night with this method. If you've never done it before, the main trick is not bidding too much. This site Priceline and Hotwire Forum can help a bit.

The newest hotel is the Cambria Suites, followed by the Fairmont. The latter is also the most luxe, though, so it's selling for $279 on the same sample weekend as the $150 I got at the Omni. The other hotel that's right next to the arena, though, is the Marriott City Center. The Renaissance has long been the favorite in town, and it's usually reflected in the going rate. But the new Fairmont gives them some competition, and it's Feb, so really you can keep looking for some deals methinks. Plug it into Kayak.com; that usually gives you a nice overview of comparative rates from multiple sources.

I was talking to the Renaissance doorman yesterday, asking if the Capitals were there (they usually stay at the Renaissance when in town).
He said they were not there... that they basically took over the Fairmont.

That's where we go when we want to be right at the Arena.
They are in the midst of a major renovation... one floor was gutted and Hispanics were drywalling up a storm a few weeks ago.

You might consider the Marriott Courtyard on Penn avenue. It's walkable to Consol, but because it's in an area referred to as the Cultural District, you have a nice selection of bars and restaurants close by. There's not too much close to the arena.
