Not that I am discouraging the Allegheny County and non-PA posters, but it does seem a little unfortunate to me that we apparently don't have more posters from other counties in the Metro.

That could be part of the reason so many posters live in Allegheny County.
Not only is the county large (745 square miles), but the city proper is small (55 square miles), leaving more room for suburbs (690 square miles).

Pennsylvania's counties are slabs of beef compared to other places. They're larger on average than Ohio's counties, and much larger on average than Georgia's. (I currently live in the smallest county in Georgia -- a scant 121 square miles!)

Pittsburgh's metropolitan counties ranked from largest to smallest:

1. Westmoreland County (1,036 square miles)
2. Washington County (861 square miles)
3. Fayette County (798 square miles)
4. Butler County (795 square miles)
5. Allegheny County (745 square miles)
6. Armstrong County (664 square miles)
7. Beaver County (444 square miles)

Total: 5,343 square miles
Average per county: 763.3 square miles

The Pittsburgh metropolitan area is slightly smaller than the state of Connecticut.

Pennsylvania has 10 counties that are 1,000+ square miles:

1. Lycoming County (1,244 square miles)
2. Bradford County (1,161 square miles)
3. Clearfield County (1,154 square miles)
4. Tioga County (1,137 square miles)
5. Centre County (1,112 square miles)
6. Potter County (1,081 square miles)
7. Somerset County (1,081 square miles)
8. Crawford County (1,038 square miles)
9. Westmoreland County (1,036 square miles)
10. Bedford County (1,015 square miles)

Lycoming County is larger than the state of Rhode Island.

I share your sentiments. I'd love to learn more about Butler, Beaver/Beaver Falls, Greensburg, Washington, Canonsburg, and other great places in the adjacent areas to Allegheny County as I love to explore and am eager to whip out my new digital camera for some photo tours, but as I expected nearly everyone on this sub-forum lives in/around the city proper.

You don't need people here to live in the outer counties in order to get out and explore. I used to just drive around and quickly learned more about some areas than a lot of the locals I worked with. All you need is some spare time and some gas in the tank (and get the brakes checked!) Winter, of course, may not be the absolute best time for that sort of wandering around.

They don't post cuz you can't get the Internet connected to a double wide.

JK. It does say Pittsburgh City Data.

But like Greg42 said, take a day trip to the foreign lands of Butler, Beaver, Westmoreland, and Washington. You'll have fun n'at.

I absolutely agree with those above. I never understood how unique this area is until I took day trips along the Mon through Charleroi, California and Brownsville and the Ohio through Beaver, East Liverpool, Steubenville, Wheeling and beyond.

It's too bad the Pechin Shopping Village isn't what it used to be, that would have been a good subject for a photo tour back when you could stuff yourself in the cafeteria for $1.05, then repair to the handicapped-accessible restroom where the fellow next to you is washing his dentures in the sink and the drain just dropped into the creek below.

We are not in the metro area but have visited many times for pleasure and business and though it's not home seems to feel more like it could be. And it's about as far from where my wife grew up as we live now, in the other direction in PA. The Pittsburgh diaspora is fairly numerous in Harrisburg, under their influence I find myself saying y'uns n'at, clearly it's time to redd up my vocabulary.

I live in O'Hara Township. I also get a kick out of checking out the Montana or Vermont forums because I would be living in one of those spots if I won the Mega Millions.

Greenville is actually as pretty as it is in photos. I visited a year ago, along with Ashville NC. Both were nice places - that entire region was great.

I also drove through Pittsburgh, Hagerstown, Frederick, Cincinnati, Louisville KY, Baltimore, Charleston SC, Nashville TN, Chattanooga TN, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and down to Florida. But anyways, Greenville was as pretty as it is in photos. I wanted to see it for myself as well

I was born and raised in Allegheny county. I lived in a variety of suburbs around Pittsburgh, mainly on the Eastern side (though I lived in McKees Rocks for several years). We moved from Pittsburgh to Colorado because we needed a change. So, while no longer a resident, Pittsburgh on-goings still hold interest to me.
