My husband and three kids are moving to the area in soon. I know NOTHING of the area and really need help. We are looking for a subdivision/suburb that has lots of families/kids. Somewhere with newer homes & shops. And of course, GREAT schools. Which brings me to ask for more help. . . what are the best schools? Public or Private?

Also, without sounding snobby. . . are there lots of Starbucks?!

I appreciate everyones advice!

Not enough information for us to help. Read some of these posts and ask specific questions regarding, commute, budget, rent, buy, city, burb, etc.

Yeah, add some more info for us to help in narrowing your choices. Budget is always a good one.

One of the things I like best about Pittsburgh is there are lots of good independent coffee shops.

If somebody wants affluent, newly-developed suburbs, I tend to steer them to the north. Look at suburbs up I-279 and I-79 north of the city.

Default More details

Work out of house. House budget between $300 - $400ish. Prefer newer homes (no work). Looking at buying and renting since we don't know the area.

For that kind of money you could probably look at places in nice city neighborhoods like Squirrel Hill if you were interested. Lots of shops and such nearby, as well as excellent Catholic and private schools (and apparently decent public schools from what others write here). Or Mt Lebanon for something else somewhat more urban (but still quasi-suburban) with shops and good schools. The houses would likely be older but in good repair.
If you would prefer something more new and suburban, you can check out Fox Chapel or other areas north as mentioned previously. Out towards the east you could check out Hempfield or Penn Townships. Though your shops (excluding the strip malls along Rt. 30 and such) and Starbucks options are somewhat more limited out that way at least.

By the way, writing "shops" makes it sound to me like you're looking for something more Main-Streety, as opposed to "shopping" which would incicate whatever sort of store/mall/etc.

$400,000 would get you a nice newer home in O'Hara Township in the well-regarded Fox Chapel School District. You'd be near to the Waterworks Mall, Fox Chapel Plaza, and you'd be perhaps a 15-minute drive or so from the Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills. You'd also not be far from the shopping opportunities in the North Hills. East Liberty in the city proper of Pittsburgh would also be just across the Highland Park Bridge from you, and here you'll find Target (opening July 2011), Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Edible Arrangements, Home Depot, Anthropologie, Staples, Petland, Borders, and more. I deliver for a living, and O'Hara Township does a stellar job with their roads during snow storms, so I'd assume their other services are great as well.

just to add to the ohara twp suggestion. the mentioned waterworks has a starbucks inside the barnes and nobles as well as another coffee shop at the other end of the plaza and also from ohara you would be closer or at least as close to the target in harmarville as opposed to the coming target in east liberty. that would also put you a short drive over the hulton bidge from oakmont which has a nice nice main st type business district including a bookstore boutique shops the oakmont bakery and a movie theater.

I agree with whoever said I-279 and I-79 North suburbs.

Cranberry Township (Butler County) sounds the most fitting.

Those are the shops/ing I would be looking for. Sorry for not being clear. Thank you for being specific. I love Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. I also like the sound of "stellar job with their roads during snow storms"!!!

Thank you all!
