Hi everyone,

I have posted before that my DH and I would like to relocate to Pitt one day, if he can find a job there. He has sent his resume off to one position that says it is in South Pitt / New Stanton Area. Can you tell me more about this area? When I look for houses on realtor.com, which towns/areas are close to New Stanton that I can keep an eye open for. It is hard coming from DE where there are only 3 counties and I know every town here! I tried searching just for New Stanton but nothing came up at all.... Also, is this area family friendly (good schools, lots to do, etc)? Thanks!!

Katie

New Stanton is in Westmoreland County, where I-70 joins up with the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

And that, unfortunately, is about all I personally know about New Stanton. However, there are lots of popular places to live in Westmoreland County, and hopefully others will chime in.

It can be hard to get a lay of the land, especially since most maps have township names as a pin-point on a map. However, most townships here are huge in terms of area. This map is the best I have found illustrate Westmoreland County: http://www.mtpleasanttwp.com/images/39thColor.gif

Unfortunately, it is a little hard to read the township and borough names. New Stanton is pretty easy to make out. It is almost completely surrounded by Hempfield Township. New Stanton is part of the Hempfield Area School District (as is Hempfield Township and some other smaller boroughs within its borders).

If you are interested in searching for properties in Hempfield Township, you'll need to search for "Greensburg, PA." To make things super-confusing, some townships here have to borrow their mailing address from the nearest "city." So, you can live in municipality X, but have a mailing address of municipality Y.

New Stanton is technically southeast of Pittsburgh in Westmoreland County rather than south of the city. The area is a mix between suburban and rural, the latter which is especially true the further south you go. I-70 in that area can be very busy however as I-76 (Mainline PA Turnpike), PA 66 (Greensburg Toll Road) and Route 119 passes right through there, serving as a stopping point for travelers and truck drivers in that part of the county. As such, you will find the usual array of restaurants, gas stations and motels in New Stanton.

The area is served by the Hempfield Area School District, which is one of the largest in Western Pennsylvania. The education there is pretty comprehensive and students tend to perform well, at least when compared to some of the other surrounding districts in some of the more rural areas.

There are some decent housing plans that have been built in the New Stanton area in recent years. Next door in Youngwood, you will also find some of these newer housing developments in certain areas, whereas downtown Youngwood has the older housing, although it may come off as a little rundown. Regardless, it is still relatively safe. A few more miles to the north brings you to many more quality neighborhoods in Hempfield Township, just outside the city of Greensburg. If you want something more upscale and you have the money, this area is the place to find it. Greensburg itself has many other choices to consider.

You will not find many things to do in New Stanton, although depending on what you and your family like to do, you may find what you need in nearby Greensburg. For starters, there's an outdoor swimming pool, indoor ice arena, public and private golf courses, large parks with places to walk around and check out the scenery in a lakefront setting, a large skate park, bowling alleys, movie theaters, athletic clubs, bike trails and much more. If you're into winter sports, then there's Seven Springs and Hidden Valley resorts about a half hour to the east along the PA Turnpike. In addition, Greensburg has the Westmoreland Art Museum and the Palace Theatre where many national acts perform. Retail stores and dining establishments are also plentiful with just about every national retailer and restaurant represented. Greensburg is also home to Westmoreland Mall, which is technically in Hempfield Township.
